Sainz Brazil GP FP1 – Carlos Sainz lead team-mate Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari one-two in FP1 at the Brazil GP as Mercedes’ George Russell rounded out the top three.

Sainz posted the benchmark of a 1:11.732 on the C4 red side-walled Soft tyres and was 0.158 seconds clear of Leclerc as Russell was a further 0.133 adrift in third and set his time on the C3 yellow-marked Mediums.

All 20 drivers wasted no time taking to the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace as the tightened Sprint race format only gives teams a one-hour practice session to prepare their set-ups for the entire weekend.

Due of the lack of practice time, duties were split between race runs and just a few qualifying simulation stints, with all teams beginning proceedings on Pirelli’s C2 white-harder compounds.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen immediately set the benchmark of a 1:13.950 on the hards to go P1 in-front of team-mate Sergio Perez, who is looking bounce back from a heartbreaking opening lap retirement at his home Grand Prix in Mexico last time out.

Both drivers improved on the same rubber with Verstappen’s 1:13.138 putting him four tenths clear of the Mexican, followed by Mercedes’ Sir Lewis Hamilton, Haas F1 Team’s Nico Hulkenberg and the second Silver Arrow of George Russell at the 15th minute mark, who later jumped his team-mate into third.

After the 23rd-minute mark, Scuderia AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda was lighting up the time-sheets as the Japanese driver hit the top on the mediums.

But, just before the mid-way point, Tsunoda was bettered by Verstappen and then Russell, who hit the top with a 1:11.865 on the same medium compound before Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso split Russell and Verstappen in second whilst using hards.

Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen who was a late arrival after a Wednesday flight cancellation, momentarily appeared in the top three as the first of the few on the C4 red-branded softer compounds.

His team-mate Hulkenberg came within 0.063 seconds of temporarily taking first place away from Russell, the Haas pairing preceding a flurry of qualifying simulation stints on the softs from Ferrari and Williams in Free Practice 1’s final third.

Russell was finally knocked off by Sainz with a 1:11.732 effort on the softs, with Leclerc making it a Ferrari one-two.

Russell remained third and ahead of Hulkenberg, Williams Racing’s Alexander Albon and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll who were fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly finished FP1 seventh, followed by Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu who placed eighth as the second Williams of Logan Sargeant and Magnussen completed the top ten.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso ended the sole practice session of the Sprint weekend outside the top ten in 11th and ahead of former McLaren team-mate Hamilton who placed 12th for Mercedes.

Scuderia AlphaTauri pairing Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo were 13th and 14th respectively and in-front of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon and newly-crowned three-time world champion Verstappen who were both 15th and 16th in the classification.

Red Bull’s Perez and the two McLaren MCL60 entries of Norris and Piastri brought up the rear.

The two McLaren drivers opted not to post a lap-time on the softs, electing to save them for later on.

The session had one note-worthy incident as Norris and Hulkenberg escaped damage when they made slight contact at Juncao, which gave the latter a trip to see the stewards.

Hulkenberg later appeared to have a loss of power at turn four, travelling slowly back to the pits.
