With less than a month away for the 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship, one cannot express it’s excitement about the new official F1 2020 game coming out on the weekend of the Formula 1 Pirelli Grosser Preis Der Steiermark 2020 (Round 2) and this new career mode where you can create, manage and race your own Formula 1 team as the eleventh team on the grid.

My Team is the major all-new feature for the F1 2020 game, a first for the gaming franchise. Alongside the well-established career mode, you can now experience the game as a driver-manager, which offers you a managerial side of the sport, where you create your own team and go on a quest for World Championship glory.

This is where the fun begins, you start by choosing your own driver and car, then building a cool visual team identity by picking a logo, livery, selecting your own colour scheme.

From there, you get to choose your initial sponsors, any of the four engine suppliers (Ferrari, Honda, Mercedes or Honda) and a team-mate from 2019 FIA Formula 2 grid.

In My Team, you will always want to select the best driver possible in your budget range, so make a wise decision on who is going to drive alongside you. With the games all-new driver rating system, you’ll be able to pick your team-mate from Formula 2. Once you start getting some victories for your outfit, F1 drivers start to fall into your budget.

Driver Market

Who will be best for your team? Checkout the F1 Driver Market where you will be able to compare Formula 1 and Formula 2 drivers based on their Awareness, Experience, Pace and Race Craft, alongside their market value and acclaim levels they would bring to your team.

All stats and driver skills are built upon real-life data from the past five Formula 1 and Formula 2 World Championship seasons. You can see the comparisons here:

Facing the Media

After your team is all created and selected your team-mate it’s time to face the press for the first time. You will be interviewed by Formula 1 Digital Presenter and Reporter Will Buxton who will ask you hard-hitting questions. Your responses affect your team, it’s acclaim and facilities. Once that is done, your car is unveiled to the world.

Each facility is a department within your team and has multiple areas that need to be built up.

  • The Marketing department is here to help you strategise and find new sponsors, promote your team and increase revenue.

You will also need to manage your teams resources and time during the week to ensure that they keep motivated. The season’s timeline shows all the events coming up, which will race through and boost performance.

There are positives and negatives to team activities, so sending a driver to take part in fitness training camps could have an effect on less time with sponsors.

Also you have to balance managing and upgrading your facilities, otherwise you will need to temporarily shutdown one or more of your departments in order to save money. This action will have consequences, so only make this choice when necessary.

Race

Now you are ready to take part as the 11th team on the grid in the world of Formula 1, driving the car you have developed throughout the championship season. Whilst driving and managing, there is no time for any inner-team rivalries as you work together in your aim to score the best results possible to achieve World Driver’s and Constructors Championship success.

Acclaim

Acclaim is the most important part of My Team Career Mode – the more you have, the better. Drivers and teams both have acclaim, as a driver, the more you have, the more your salary will increase.

The more Acclaim you and your squad achieve, the better sponsorship and opportunities arise. Whatever drivers earn gets added to their respective team’s Acclaim, and with that sees more sponsorship and opportunities.

These make it easier to upgrade your facilities, giving you an advantage as each facility has it’s own research and development tree you can see and upgrade using resource points – and once putting it all together you can upgrade your facilities, develop your car and make them very competitive to win World Championships.

Make your My Team career become reality when F1 2020 comes out Tuesday July 7 on PlayStation 4, X-Box One X, Windows PC and Google Stadia.

F1 2019 Game Review

Featured Image F1 2019 Video Gaming
A hazy race start at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019 race image, F1 2019, PlayStation 4, Video Gaming.

Better late than never, with F1 taking a week’s break before returning to action next weekend in Mexico, here is my review of the F1 2019 game:

Thrilling is the word you can describe this year’s edition of the official Formula 1 game from Codemasters, which celebrates its 10 year anniversary of making the sport’s games.

When the game was announced for a two-month earlier release than it’s predecessor, there was much concern about the quality being sacrificed but that can be put to bed.

After playing the game for a couple of days now since it’s release, you can really see the fine effort and detail that has gone into making it the best F1 game yet in both the online and offline modes.

F1 2019 Game Main Menu.

The big addition to the game was F1’s feeder series, the FIA Formula 2 Championship, which has not been just on the top of my wish-list but many.

Driving the F2 machinery for the first time was really impressive, the cars are a great challenge with less downforce, narrower tyres and less power than it’s F1-counterparts.

FIA Formula 2 Championship, the newest addition to the game. F1 2019, Video Gaming.

Codemasters nailed Formula 2 to perfection with it’s exciting wheel-to-wheel battles that keep you on the edge of your seat especially when you’re the one behind the wheel.

Having F2 integrated into career mode takes the experience to a whole new level, as you tackle three short scenarios rather than completing the full season (which you can do in it’s own dedicated section on the game). You start in the 2018 season rather than the current campaign, but works perfectly as you get promoted into Formula 1 for the 2019 championship season.

In F2, the story mode begins with two fictional characters, Lukas Weber who is nice and a very supportive team-mate and have a rival in Devon Butler, an arrogant maverick. Both bring life to career mode and take it to another level.

The two characters follow you into Formula 1 and play a major role in your debut season, acting as a reference to your success. In Spain, you must make a decision of whether or not to let your team-mate Weber through after you get hit with a turbo issue. For those who are not interested in doing the F2 part of your career mode, the game gives you the chance to jump straight into F1.

One of the major additions to career mode and one we have long been waiting for is driver transfers. This gives the opportunity to see some potential big switches like Sebastian Vettel to Mercedes or Lewis Hamilton to Red Bull and interesting moves among the rest of the field. This along with the development war makes career mode a lot more enticing to play the full ten seasons.

F1 2019 Gaming
Alain Prost in the Ferrari F1-90, F1 2019 Game.

The other big headline feature to the game was “Senna vs Prost”. The challenge mode where you either compete as Senna in his championship winning McLaren-Honda MP4/5b or Prost in his Ferrari F1-90 (641) in eight different scenarios. Unfortunately, it is like as the pre-existing challenge mode with the inclusion of Senna and Prost.

Along with the Senna/Prost machinery, to celebrate Codemasters’ 10th year anniversary, it added the Ferrari F10 and McLaren-Mercedes MP4-25 cars from the 2010 Formula One World Championship season to it’s array of classic cars with the handling department getting each car’s uniqueness spot on.

The series also continued it’s great improvement curve to make the current machinery look and feel more realistic than they have ever been. The gameplay also has the AI drivers to be no slouches at all as they rattle your nerves running wheel-to-wheel and can launch sensational dive-bombing moves on the inside if you are not careful. With the difficulty slider ranging from the 0-110, you can find your right level.

Many gamers prefer racing each other online either casually or in leagues as I once did with Precision Racing League. On this year’s game, if you end up finding yourself in a situation where someone uses you as a break into a corner and sends you into the gravel – there is not much Codemasters can do, but it’s ranking system means once you have been given a “safety rating”, you will be matched only with other players in your skill level.

This year’s edition finally allowed more customisation, with custom liveries taking a place in multiplayer mode for the first time. Gamers can unlock badges, helmets, liveries by battling in challenges and earning in-game currency to purchase them. It provides you with a chance to explore other sections on the game that were previously pointless to use.

The newest online additions to the series encourages you to participate as well as follow F1 Esports’ third season. Codemasters made it a lot more easier to follow and be part of the competition.

For those who want to race online competitively but are not quick enough for the Esport series, Codemasters added a ‘leagues’ mode where anyone can create or join a league.

Online racers can now replay race highlights within the game, which looks sensational with a mix of different liveries and helmets.

Also the graphical improvements with wet-weather racing visually stunning alongside the environmental detailing around the circuits looking superb.

The Verdict: 9/10

F1 2019 Codemasters Video Gaming
Lewis Hamilton, #44, Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport, F1 W10 EQ Power+, Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019, F1 2019 Game.

After playing this game for a good few months since it’s release date, I will give F1 2019 a nine out of ten. I enjoyed it’s great challenges with many wheel-to-wheel battles alongside the AI in all modes whether it be racing in the current season, F2 or with the classics. I have been playing racing games particularly Formula 1 games since I was four years old and this has been one of the best yet. The graphics have become like artwork with it’s finest attention to detail and I expect that to shift up a gear in the games to come.

Career mode continues to get better year by year, especially with the newest addition of F2, which was so competitive and enjoyable. I love developing the car as you once you reach the top tier in Formula 1 in career, whether you are trying to rebuild Williams from the doldrums back to it’s glory days or trying to outfox the dominant Mercedes with Ferrari. If I could have a few more features in the mode itself, one would be the return of press conferences and the other – walking around the paddock and entering your team garage. Also in race weekend situations, I would love to see the addition of the red flag, especially if there is a major crash on track and it could for example, cause you to be shockingly eliminated in qualifying.

The Senna vs Prost part was fun but would have been more thrilling if actual scenarios from the past were replicated. The cars are a lot of fun to drive in all the different eras available and my love of using classic machinery that I grew up watching, especially the 90’s and 00’s. Adding classic circuits is another feature that I would love to see return, especially like my home of Adelaide, racing on the Old Hockenheimring, Nurburgring, Brands Hatch, Estoril, Jerez, Istanbul etc.

Custom liveries on the 2019 spec car was another brilliant feature I enjoyed using, I am really looking forward to seeing what will be added next in the customisation section. If it were to become like GT Sport has where you can choose your own sponsors or design your very own logo, it would be amazing.

Whether you are a passionate and devout Formula 1 fan like myself, a casual fan or have the adrenaline rush to play a racing game, I suggest you pick up this game and experience the thrill of Grand Prix racing like you never have before.

The game is out now on PlayStation 4, X-Box One’s family of devices including X-Box One X and Windows PC (DVD and Steam).
