#DutchGP Qualifying Report: @LandoNorris pips @Max33Verstappen to pole. #F1

Norris Dutch GP Pole – McLaren’s Lando Norris snatched pole position from home favourite Max Verstappen by 0.356 seconds as the other MCL38 entry of Oscar Piastri rounded out the top three.

In Q3, Norris held provisional pole in the initial flyers posting a 1:10.074 after setting two purple sectors in one and three and was 0.119 seconds quicker than team-mate Piastri whilst Verstappen was a further 0.168 seconds off the Briton in third after setting three personal best sectors.

In the final flying laps, Verstappen set a personal best sector one to then scoring the best middle sector and could not improve in the final sector but moved up into the P1 slot.

Then Norris was up in sector one, then set a personal best in sector two and made once again another purple in the last sector to jump the home favourite by 0.356 seconds to snatch pole position with a lap-time of a 1:09.673.

Piastri wounded up 0.499 seconds off his pole-setting McLaren team-mate and lines up on the second row of the grid alongside Mercedes’ George Russell.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez qualified in fifth place ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who was sixth and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso who took seventh.

Williams’ Alexander Albon placed eighth as the other Aston Martin AMR24 entry of Lance Stroll and Alpine’s FP3 session-topper Pierre Gasly completed the top ten.

In the second qualifying stage, which was topped by Norris, a late improvement from Leclerc sent his Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz out in Q2 and in 11^th place and missed out on Q3 by a slim 0.069 seconds.

Mercedes’ Sir Lewis Hamilton was also the shock elimination of the session alongside Sainz wounding up 12^th.

RB’s Yuki Tsunoda qualified 13^th and ahead of MoneyGram Haas F1 Team pairing Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen who were 14^th and 15^th respectively.

In the opening segment, which was topped by Perez, the Mexican’s late improvement relegated RB’s Daniel Ricciardo to the highest of the Q1 eliminatees in 16^th and the Australian missed out on a Q2 appearance by 0.111 seconds.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon followed in 17^th as Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu were 18^th and 19^th respectively.

Williams’ Logan Sargeant was unable to post a lap-time due to his heavy crash in the earlier FP3 session.

Hamilton is currently being investigated by the stewards for impeding Perez in Q1.

2024 Dutch GP Pole Position – Lando Norris, #4, McLaren Racing-Mercedes, MCL38 – 1:09.673:

“Nice to be back and to start with a pole! It was a nice lap; qualifying was pretty smooth, and I put in some good laps. It’s harder than it looks, it’s tricky out there but I felt comfortable. The car feels amazing, everything is working very well so a big thanks to the team. I’m excited for tomorrow.”

2^nd Place – Max Verstappen, #1, Oracle Red Bull Racing, Honda-RBPT, RB20 – +0.356s:

“We just lacked a bit of pace; I tried the best I could and I’m still happy with the front row. It was tricky with the gusts of wind. I’m happy with second – considering yesterday as well, this is a good result. Hopefully the car is okay tomorrow in the race.”

3^rd Place – Oscar Piastri, #81, McLaren Formula 1 Team-Mercedes, MCL38 – +0.499s:

“Just didn’t do a good enough job, the first half of the lap was okay, the second half wasn’t what I needed. the car has been quick this weekend so a bit disappointing not to be higher up. But I have a good car so hopeful of getting some good points tomorrow. The pace looked good in the long run, so hopefully we can have a good day, get a good start and make up a couple of places.”
