Verstappen Emilia Romagna Pole – Championship leader Max Verstappen blasted to take his 39th-career pole in qualifying at the Emilia Romagna GP and ahead of McLaren pairing Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris who completed the top three with all three drivers within 0.095 seconds of each other.
Verstappen also tied with late great multiple three-time world champion Ayrton Senna’s record of eight consecutive pole positions at this very circuit where the legend tragically lost his life 30 years ago in Imola.
In Q3, Verstappen scored a purple sector one and two personal bests to post the provisional pole time in the initial flyers of a 1:14.869 and was a very narrow slim 0.073 seconds clear over Norris who posted a personal best in sectors one and three with a purple middle sector as Leclerc was a further 0.147 seconds adrift of the Dutchman in third.
In the final flying laps, Verstappen posted the best sector one and two personal best in the final two sectors to set the pole time with a 1:14.746 and was 0.074 seconds quicker than Piastri who set the best final sector to move into second and demoted team-mate Norris to third and was a further 0.091 seconds off the Dutchman’s pole effort in third.
In the middle segment, which was topped by Verstappen, his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez failed to improve on his final hot-lap and missed out on Q3 by a very slim 0.015 seconds in 11th and ahead of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon who placed 12th and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll who came 13th in the order.
Williams Racing’s Alexander Albon and the other Alpine A524 entry of Pierre Gasly were the slowest of the Q2 runners qualifying in 14th and 15th respectively.
In the first qualifying stage, which was topped by Verstappen, Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas missed out on a Q2 appearance by a very slim 0.022 seconds wounding up 16th and in-front of team-mate Zhou Guanyu who placed 17th.
MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen took 18th and Aston Martin’s shock eliminatee Fernando Alonso qualified a low 19th with the latter carrying too much speed into the Villeneuve Chicane and skidded off into a wild off-track moment through the grass and gravel trap on his flyer and was unable to improve to get out of the elimination zone.
Williams’ Logan Sargeant was originally 17th but was demoted to the rear after his lap-time was invalidated for exceeding track limits.
Piastri is also currently under investigation from the stewards for impeding Magnussen.

“Really difficult weekend so far, even this morning. Really happy to be on pole, I didn’t expect that. We made some final changes just before qualifying and I could push a bit more. The adrenaline is very, very high. It’s a great start to the year but it’s very special as its 30 years since [Senna died] very pleased to get pole here, it is very special.”
2nd Place – Oscar Piastri, #81, McLaren Formula 1 Team, Mercedes, MCL38, +0.074s:
“A little bit of a scruffy last corner but around here it is so, so hard to do a perfect lap. So, so close to pole but so happy – it’s been a little while since I was last up here. I think yes [we can fight for the win]. You can never count out Max and Red Bull, but confidence is high.”
3rd Place – Lando Norris, #4, McLaren Formula 1 Team, Mercedes, MCL38, +0.091s:
“P3 is not a bad job at all, within a tenth both of us of P1 so tiny, tiny margins. We’ve had a great day, a great weekend so far and Oscar has done a great job. We are getting closer, to be ahead of Ferrari is also a nice result for us. Going to be a tough race.”
