Hamilton Azerbaijan GP FP2 – Sir Lewis Hamilton topped the afternoon practice session at the Azerbaijan GP ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari 1-2 as Mercedes’ George Russell completed the top three. Championship contenders Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri had a brush with the walls as the former suffered suspension damage ending up 10th and the latter down in 12th.

Hamilton topped the session with the red side-walled C6 softer compounds setting a 1:41.293 and was a slim 0.074 seconds quicker than team-mate Leclerc whilst Russell was a further 0.477 seconds off his former team-mate in third.

 

The two Sauber’s of Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto were the first to head out on the C5 yellow-marked mediums followed by Haas’s Esteban Ocon also on the C5’s.

 

Hulkenberg was the first to register the benchmark of a 1:44.218 as team-mate Bortoleto slots into P2 and 0.234 down.

 

Ocon moved into third briefly as Piastri shot to the top with a 1:43.907 whilst Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda slotted into second.

 

Williams’ Alexander Albon then split Piastri and Tsunoda with his 1:43.467 on the hards.

 

Then Verstappen emerged on top posting a 1:43.226 to be a slim 0.081 seconds quicker than the Australian with three personal bests.

 

The other FW47 entry of Carlos Sainz jumped to third to be 0.102 seconds off Verstappen’s benchmark on his set of the C5 mediums.

 

Hulkenberg then jumped to P1 with a 143.064 then was beaten by Mercedes’ George Russell’s 1:42.959 then by Bortoleto’s 1:42.561 whilst then Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc ousted the Brazilian with his 1:42.207 on the C6’s and was beaten by Norris’s 1:42.199 with two purple sectors in sectors two and three as the Briton headed the time-sheets at the 11th minute mark of the hour-long session.

 

Verstappen on his set of the C6’s improved to third to be 0.296 off Norris’s benchmark.

 

Both RB’s Liam Lawson and Williams’ Sainz then jumped to fifth and sixth respectively to be 0.457 and 0.535 seconds off Norris’s effort.

 

Leclerc followed and knocked Norris off the P1 spot with a 1:41.786 to be 0.413 seconds quicker than the McLaren.

 

Sir Lewis Hamilton on the C5’s with two purples in sectors one and two ended up 0.152 seconds behind his team-mate Leclerc on his flyer.

 

The other RB of Isack Hadjar with three personal bests shot to fourth to be 0.657 seconds off Leclerc’s benchmark with a 1:42.443 effort at the session’s 15th minute mark.

 

Sainz followed with two personal best opening sectors setting a 1:42.255 to be 0.469 seconds off former team-mate Leclerc’s best effort.

 

Hamilton was on another hot-lap and with a purple sector one and a personal best middle sector pipped team-mate Leclerc at the top setting a 1:41.543 to be 0.243 seconds clear at the 20th-minute mark.

 

The majority of the field returned to the pits to adjust their setups, to bolt on another set of the C6 softs and prepare to do their qualifying simulation stints.

 

Replays showed Leclerc had a brief tap of the wall at the exit of turn four.

 

Colapinto was the first to emerge following an eight-minute lull and the Argentine was on the C5’s.

 

Coming out of turn four, McLaren’s Norris suffered a big whack into the wall damaging his rear suspension and the Briton responded that his tyre “are gone” as the Briton suffered a left rear puncture and limped back to the pits.

 

Colapinto moved up into 14th with his effort as Albon jumped to third posting a 1:42.177 on his qualifying simulation on the C6 softs.

 

Verstappen then jumped to third setting a 1:41.936 with a personal best opening and final sector to be 0.393 seconds off Hamilton’s benchmark.

 

Lawson then slotted into fourth to be 0.446 seconds off Hamilton’s best effort as the Kiwi set a 1:41.989.

 

Piastri on his hot-lap also had a moment hitting the wall like his team-mate and managed to return back, put on another set of softs and ventured back out.

 

Leclerc was next flying on his C6’s and with a purple sector one and personal best middle sector went quickest on a 1:41.367 to be 0.176 seconds ahead of team-mate Hamilton whilst Russell moved up to third setting a 1:41.770 to be 0.403 seconds adrift.

 

Hamilton with two personal bests then improved to be 0.176 seconds off team-mate Leclerc in second whilst Haas’s Oliver Bearman jumped to fourth to be 0.524 seconds off his fellow British-compatriots time-topper with 21 minutes remaining.

 

Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli was next on his flying lap on the softs and rockets to fourth to be 0.412 seconds off Leclerc’s best effort with less than 16 minutes on the clock.

 

Hamilton had another flying tour and with a purple opening sector and a middle personal best pipped his team-mate Leclerc at the top with a 1:41.293 to be a slim 0.074 seconds clear with 13 minutes remaining in the session.

 

As the clock was running down the field were focused on their traditional long race data gathering runs in the final quarter towards the end of the 60-minute session.

 

Replays showed Bearman suffered a lock-up into the run-off area near the castle section as the Briton reversed his VF-25 entry and continued on.

 

The session ended with the two Ferrari’s of Hamilton and Leclerc first and second respectively as the two Mercedes of Russell and Antonelli followed in third and fourth.

 

Bearman took fifth and ahead of Verstappen who was sixth and Lawson who placed seventh in the classification.

 

Ocon followed in eighth whilst Albon and the aforementioned Norris completed the top ten.
