Norris British GP FP2 – Last weekend’s Austrian GP winner Lando Norris ended FP2 at his home Grand Prix on top of the timesheets for McLaren and ahead of Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Sir Lewis Hamilton who completed the top three runners.

Norris set the session-topping benchmark on the C4 red side-walled softer tyres with a 1:25.816 and was 0.222 seconds faster than Leclerc whilst Hamilton was a further 0.301 seconds adrift of his fellow British-compatriot in third.

Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg lead the field out on track and on a set of C3 yellow-branded medium compounds.

The German was the first to post a lap-time with a 1:30.011 and was quickly beaten by both Haas drivers Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon who briefly held the P1 spot.

Then Colapinto was beaten by Sainz, Stroll, Piastri, Hadjar, Antonelli as Ferrari’s Leclerc and Hamilton them put their SF-25’s to the top.

Hamilton posted a 1:27.280 to go 0.215 seconds quicker than team-mate Leclerc as Norris slot into P3 and was 0.223 seconds adrift in third.

Russell put his Mercedes fourth in the order and 0.417 seconds down whilst Verstappen with a purple and two personal bests moved up to second in the order on a 1:27.339 to be 0.059 seconds off Hamilton’s time-topper at the eighth minute mark of the second 60-minute session.

Piastri was next with two personal best sectors and a purple to go P1 and 0.084 seconds faster than Hamilton as the McLaren driver set a 1:27.196 whilst Sainz slotted his Williams FW47 entry into fourth place in the classification.

Hadjar then jumped into P1, but Hamilton reclaimed top spot off the Frenchman with a 1:26.902 to go 0.160 seconds quicker as the session past the 12th-minute mark.

Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli then slotted into fifth with three personal bests to be 0.336 seconds adrift, but that was short-lived as Leclerc put his Ferrari into that spot and 0.294 seconds off team-mate Hamilton’s benchmark.

Russell then moved into third place to be 0.173 seconds off fellow British-compatriot Hamilton’s time-topping effort.

Piastri was next with a personal best sector one and a purple middle sector but wounded up a slim 0.010 seconds off Hamilton’s effort to go second in the classification with 44 minutes left on the clock.

Williams’ Sainz suffered a spin out of the exit of Luffield into Woodcote almost collecting Hamilton’s Ferrari and just avoided a Sauber.

Replays showed Sainz parked at right angles to the track. The Spaniard did get going, coming close to collecting Hulkenberg as he tried to drive across the track to get the turning angle to point the right way again.

Sainz was currently under investigation from the steward for rejoining the track unsafely.

Leclerc at that time moved into P1 with a 1:26.887 as Hamilton then demoted his team-mate to second with a 1:26.592 with two purples in sectors one and three to go 0.295 seconds quicker.

Most of the pack came in as a brief lull of on-track action took place from the 20th-23rd minute mark of proceedings as the teams and drivers worked on their car setups and bolted on a set of the C4 red side-walled softer compounds with a lighter fuel load for their qualifying simulation efforts.

Russell and Antonelli were the first to emerge on the softs as the former slotted into P1 with three personal best to post a 1:26.523 seconds whilst the latter ousted his team-mate with a 1:26.383 to go 0.140 seconds faster.

Lawson slotted into P4 on his soft tyre effort as his RB team-mate Isack Hadjar jumped into third dropping his team-mate and Hamilton to fourth and fifth in the order.

Albon was next to go sixth in the classification with his three personal best efforts and was 0.457 seconds off Antonelli’s best time.

Leclerc was next on his soft flyer and shot to the head of the times with a purple sector two to go quickest with a 1:26.202 and 0.181 seconds ahead of Antonelli.

Hamilton abandoned his flying tour as Piastri with a purple opening sector and a personal best middle sector could only improve to P2 and was 0.084 seconds off Leclerc’s benchmark.

Norris followed on his hot lap with the softer rubber, and with three purples hammered in a 1:25.816 to top the timesheets on a 1:25.816 to end up 0.386 seconds quicker with 28 minutes left on the clock whilst reigning world champion Verstappen could only reach eighth in the classification with three personal bests and wounded up 0.795 seconds adrift.

Replays showed Verstappen suffering with understeer in the corner.

Hamilton was next with three personal best efforts to go second in the order and 0.301 seconds off Norris’s benchmark.

Stroll with his upgraded AMR25 racer slotted into sixth place with a 1:26.430 and 0.614 down on Norris’s time-topper with 25 minutes remaining in the session.

Leclerc then jumped back into second to go 0.222 seconds off Norris’s P1 benchmark and ahead of Ferrari team-mate Hamilton.

Verstappen was next with three personal bests to slot into fifth overall and behind Piastri who was sitting in fourth and just finished his flying lap as the session approached the final 20 minutes.

After completing their qualifying simulations, the drivers returned to the pits around the 42nd minute mark to put in a higher level of fuel and a set of mediums to begin their traditional long race data gathering runs for the final quarter of the session.

Norris and Piastri were both back on the mediums, with McLaren not too keen to find out how long the soft tyre could last today. Mercedes also sent their drivers back out on the yellow-marked compound too.

With ten minutes left, Albon had clocked the most laps of anyone so far with 22 and counting. Williams reported they understood why they have dropped off the pace as of late, and why their reliability has not been as strong as it was before.

The session remained stable with no more improvements due to the higher fuel runs as Norris finished Free Practice Two on top ahead of Ferrari pairing Leclerc and Hamilton who rounded out the top three.

Championship leader Piastri was fourth in the other MCL39 entry and in-front of Verstappen who placed fifth and Antonelli who took sixth in the classification.

Stroll followed in seventh as Russell finished the day in eighth overall whilst the two RB’s of Hadjar and Lawson completed the top ten.
