Russell British GP Pole – George Russell pipped team-mate Sir Lewis Hamilton to take his third-career pole position and made it a Mercedes front-row lockout in an intense qualifying at the British GP as McLaren’s Lando Norris settled for third to make it a British top three at their home Grand Prix.

In Q3, Russell was the quickest in the initial flyers posting two personal bests in sectors one and two with a purple final sector to set the benchmark of a 1:26.024 and was a very narrow 0.006 seconds ahead of Norris as Hamilton was a further 0.172 seconds adrift of his Mercedes team-mate in third.

In the final flying laps, Russell failed to improve in the opening sector, but responded with two final purple sectors to score a 1:25.819 to take pole position by 0.171 seconds over team-mate Hamilton who also could not improve in sector one but took two personal bests in the final two sectors as Norris ended up a further 0.211 seconds to qualify third on the grid.

Championship leader Max Verstappen suffered floor damage after his wild moment in Q1 after suffering a snap of oversteer into Copse and taking an excursion into the gravel trap as the Red Bull driver managed to push his RB20 to reach fourth on the grid.

The other McLaren MCL38 entry of Oscar Piastri took fifth and in-front of MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s Nico Hulkenberg who qualified an impressive sixth as Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz could only reach seventh.

Aston Martin duo Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso qualified eighth and tenth respectively as Williams Racing’s Alexander Albon split the AMR24 entries in ninth.

In the second qualifying stage, which was topped by Norris, a late improvement from Stroll knocked out Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.159 seconds meaning the Monegasque will start 11^th on the grid for tomorrow’s British GP.

Williams’ Logan Sargeant followed in 12^th and ahead of RB’s Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo who were 13^th and 15^th respectively as Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu split the RB duo in 14^th.

In a rain-threatened opening segment, which was topped by Hamilton, a late improvement from Tsunoda eliminated Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas sending him into 16^th.

MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen followed in 17^th and in-front of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon who took 18^th.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was the shock eliminatee as the Mexican brought out the red flag after suffering a snap of oversteer into Copse Corner and spinning out in the damp run-off area and beaching it into the gravel trap with seven minutes and 30 seconds on the clock.

BWT Alpine F1 Team’s Pierre Gasly brought up the rear as the Frenchman will start at the back of the grid due to power-unit component changes.

Alonso and Stroll are currently investigation by the race stewards for a pit-lane infringement.

We definitely didn’t expect to be front row this weekend, but this is huge for us and for our team. The car felt fantastic out there so everyone in the garage here, all our team that have come here, they deserve this.”

3^rd Place – Lando Norris, #4, McLaren Formula 1 Team-Mercedes, MCL38 – +0.211s:

“I’m happy with P3. Three Brits lock out the top three so pretty cool here. Good laps by George and Lewis – they did an excellent job and put in some nice laps. A little mistake on my part at the end but P3 is still good.”
