#F1 #CanadianGP FP3: @LewisHamilton quickest ahead of @Max33Verstappen.
Hamilton Canadian GP FP3 – Mercedes’ Sir Lewis Hamilton topped the time-sheets in the final FP3 session at the Canadian GP ahead of championship leader Max Verstappen as George Russell completed the top three in the other F1 W15 entry.
Hamilton posted the benchmark of a 1:12.549 on the C5 red side-walled Soft tyre and was 0.374 seconds clear of Verstappen and a further 0.408 seconds in-front of team-mate Russell.
The weekend’s whole dry session saw drivers clock up the mileage on the yellow-marked C4 Medium rubber where Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly registered the opening lap-times before an unwelcomed lull in action emerged.
Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu produced the second red flag of the weekend after suffering a spin at the second corner losing the rear of his C44 racer on the turn one exit to tuck his car into the grass backwards.
When the session resumed, Verstappen placed his RB20 racer on top posting a 1:15.495 then set a 1:14.983, although this was beaten by Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso’s 1:14.870 effort, the double world champion using the more durable C3 white-marked Hard compound.
The Spaniard lowered his benchmark to a 1:14.445 to bring the medium stints to an end, as the attention drew to the qualifying simulation runs in preparation for qualifying.
Williams’ Logan Sargeant kicked off the flyers setting a 1:14.355, but the American driver was ousted of his rare appearance at the head of the leaderboard by Mercedes’ George Russell.
Alexander Albon then took the benchmark lower than 74 seconds as more improvements came in thick and fast – Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc shot to the top of the time-sheets before being demoted by Hamilton.
The seven-time world champion stayed at the top for a long time before being briefly knocked off the top spot by team-mate Russell, then Hamilton reclaimed his advantage posting a 1:12.549. 0.725 clear from his fellow British-compatriot.
Hamilton’s effort remained top of the pile for the remainder of the session as few could only get close until FP3 reached it’s end; Russell got within half a second before being pipped by Verstappen, who clipped the famous “Wall of Champions” before he set a 1:12.923, still 0.374 adrift of Hamilton’s time-topper.
Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll followed in fourth and ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri who was fifth, RB’s Daniel Ricciardo who took sixth and the other McLaren MCL38 entry of Lando Norris who placed seventh.
Aston Martin’s Alonso was eighth as Red Bull’s Perez and Ferrari’s Leclerc completed the top ten.
MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen came 11th in the order and ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz who was 12th and Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas who finished final practice 13th in the order.
Williams Racing’s Sargeant ended FP3 14th and in-front of RB’s Yuki Tsunoda who took 15th, Alpine’s Gasly who placed 16th and Haas F1 Team’s Nico Hulkenberg who finished 17th in the classification.
Williams’ Albon was 18th as Alpine’s Esteban Ocon and the aforementioned Sauber of Zhou brought up the rear.
