#F1 #CanadianGP Qualifying: @GeorgeRussell63 pips @Max33Verstappen to pole with identical lap-time.
Russell Canadian GP Pole – Mercedes’ George Russell pipped Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to take his second Formula 1-career pole position for tomorrow’s Canadian GP with the same identical lap-time as the championship leader.
In Q3, Russell held provisional pole with a purple sector two and sector three setting a 1:12.000 in the initial flyers and was 0.280 seconds clear of team-mate Hamilton as Verstappen was a further 0.358 adrift of the Mercedes in third.
On the final hot-laps, Verstappen posted the best sector one time with two personal bests to equal Russell’s time with a 1:12.000 meaning the latter holds pole position due to setting the lap-time first.
McLaren occupied the second row of the grid as Norris improved on his flying lap to take third and was a very narrow 0.021 seconds off his fellow British compatriot Russell in third as Norris’ team-mate Oscar Piastri took fourth.
RB’s Daniel Ricciardo took fifth and ahead of Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso who placed sixth and the other Mercedes of Sir Lewis Hamilton who was unable to improve on his final flyer to take seventh.
The second RB of Yuki Tsunoda qualified eighth as the other Aston Martin of Lance Stroll and Williams’ Alexander Albon completed the top ten.
In the middle segment, which was topped by Russell, the two shock exits were the two Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz missing out on a Q3 appearance by 0.032 and 0.069 seconds in 11th and 12th respectively.
Sainz found a late improvement to only jump from 14th to 11th as Albon sent Leclerc into the drop-zone eliminating the Monaco GP winner.
Williams’ Logan Sargeant followed in 13th and in-front of Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly were the slowest of the Q2 runners taking 14th and 15th.
In the opening qualifying stage, which was topped by Verstappen, his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez was the shock eliminatee by a slim 0.037 seconds after a late improvement from Albon meaning the Mexican qualified 16th.
Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu placed 17th and at the rear respectively as Alpine’s Esteban Ocon and MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s Nico Hulkenberg split the duo in 18th and 19th.
