Norris set the session-topping benchmark on the C5 red side-walled softer compound with a 1:16.098 and was a narrow 0.044 quicker than team-mate Piastri as Verstappen was a further 0.281 adrift in third.

A slow start to the session at the Hungaroring gave Red Bull pairing Verstappen and Sergio Perez clear track to play with as they began their stint on the C3 white-marked hards with the latter registering a 1:19.159 effort.

Verstappen then posted a 1:18.897 lap-time to then go fastest, and then followed up with a half-a-second gain, as Perez also found time to go 0.4 seconds off his team-mate. The gap reopened when Verstappen set a 1:17.938, helped by a front wing adjustment to fix some understeer aboard his Honda-RBPT-powered RB20.

Red Bull’s sole running around the Hungaroring came to an end after the 15-minutes mark, prompting their rivals to hit the track as they began setting a string of faster laps on the softer sets of tyres available for the weekend; Norris then posted the new benchmark with a 1:16.931 on the softs.

Mercedes’ George Russell then set a 1:16.826 on his second run on the C5 softs as the Silver Arrow looked more settled in the cooler conditions, the circuit being 20 degrees cooler than it was in FP1 yesterday. Norris, meanwhile, also reused his initial set of softer rubber, but could not find any time on his second stint.

This preceded a second stint of qualifying simulation runs on the softs in the final 20 minutes of proceedings as Russell found almost three tenths on his previous flying tour to extend his advantage: Sir Lewis Hamilton joined his team-mate covering the top two slots and only 0.2 seconds off.

Norris then reclaimed P1 with a 1:16.098, putting the McLaren driver almost half-a-second on Russell on a lap with fresher soft rubber, and was followed by Piastri going just 0.044 seconds adrift on his own flyer of the track.

This could not be matched by Verstappen’s first hot-lap on the softs, and the Dutchman lost a quarter of a second to Norris in sector two to jump into third. In his final attempt at a last flying lap at the end of the session on same set of softs, the Red Bull driver locked up at the opening corner to cement the classification.

Russell’s lap-time was fourth best overall, whilst Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz claimed fifth place in the order, after losing a heap of time in the middle sector.

RB’s Daniel Ricciardo and Williams Racing’s Alexander Albon impressed with a solid sixth and seventh in the classification respectively.

MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s Nico Hulkenberg took eighth as RB’s Yuki Tsunoda and Mercedes’ Hamilton rounded out the top ten.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished final practice outside the top ten in 11th place and ahead of Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas who was 12th and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez came 13th in the order.

Aston Martin pairing Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll ended FP3 in 14th and 15th respectively and in-front of Williams’ Logan Sargeant who took 16th and Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu who placed 17th.

Alpine duo Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon were 18th and brought up the rear respectively as MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen split the pairing in 19th.
