Piastri Hungarian GP FP3 – Championship leader Oscar Piastri lead from team-mate Lando Norris in a McLaren one-two in a sweltering FP3 session at the Hungarian GP as Charles Leclerc completed the top three for Ferrari.

Piastri set the session-topping benchmark of a 1:14.916 on the C5 red side-walled softer compounds and was a slim 0.032 seconds clear of team-mate Norris whilst Leclerc was a further 0.399 seconds adrift of the Australian in third.
McLaren’s Norris was the first driver to lead the pack out and emerged on the C3 white-marked harder compounds. His team-mate Piastri also came out on the C3’s whilst the Aston Martin’s of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll hit the track on the C4 yellow-branded mediums.
Both McLaren’s returned to the pits after scrubbing a set of the C3 harder tyres whilst Stroll and Alonso came in to switch their mediums to hards before re-joining the track.
Stroll and Alonso both returned to their garages after scrubbing their sets of the mediums and hards whilst Alpine’s Franco Colapinto emerged on the C5 red side-walled softer tyres.
Colapinto was the first to register a lap-time of a 1:18.006 whilst the majority have all remained in the pits in the opening ten minutes of proceedings and had not begun any running other than sighting tours for Norris, Piastri, Stroll and Alonso.
Pierre Gasly in the other A525 entry came out on track with a set of the C5 softs to join his team-mate along with Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg also on the softs.
Gasly was next to post a flyer with three personal bests to go third with a 1:18.104 whilst Hulkenberg slotted into P1 with his 1:18.094.
Stroll followed on his medium compound with two purple sectors to go fastest by 0.466 seconds over Colapinto with his 1:17.540 effort in the opening quarter of the final practice session.
Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda on his set of the C4’s was on his hot-lap and set two purples to go even quicker posting a 1:17.022 to be over half-a-second clear of Stroll at the head of the times.
Colapinto had another flying lap on the softs and with a purple sector three slotted into second place to be 0.288 seconds off Tsunoda’s benchmark.
Gasly was next after his team-mate and with two personal bests and a purple final sector pipped Colapinto the be 0.288 off.
Stroll then moved back into P1 with a 1:16.817, but this was short-lived as Verstappen on his softs shot to the top on a 1:16.547 to be 0.270 seconds ahead of Stroll after a purple middle sector and two personal bests.
Hulkenberg then jumped to third before being demoted by Hamilton’s 1:16.759 and a purple middle sector brought the latter to be 0.212 seconds off Verstappen’s effort.
Leclerc was next and with a purple sector two and two PB’s snatched P1 with a 1:16.406 but this was rapidly beaten by Russell’s 1:16.312 as the Mercedes driver went 0.094 seconds clear of the Monegasque driver.
Piastri then with two purple sectors jumped to P1 with a 1:16.240 to end up 0.072 seconds clear of Russell whilst Norris with three personal bests could only manage fifth to wound up 0.429 seconds adrift of his leading McLaren team-mate at the 25th minute mark of the session.
Verstappen then set a 1:16.202 with a purple middle sector to be 0.038 seconds ahead of Piastri.
Leclerc was up next on another soft flying tour and posted a 1:16.137 to be a narrow 0.065 seconds clear of Verstappen as replays showed the former dipped his left wheels into the gravel trap out of turn 12 with 31 minutes remaining in the session.
Norris then moved up into third place with three personal bests to end up 0.079 seconds off Leclerc’s benchmark.
Piastri then jumped to P1 with his 1:15.871 following two purple sectors to go 0.266 seconds clear of Leclerc just past the halfway point of the hour-long practice session.
Hamilton with three personal bests moved up into P2 with a 1:16.015 to be 0.144 seconds adrift of Piastri’s benchmark.
Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto slotted into sixth overall and wounded up 0.387 seconds ahead of Mercedes pairing Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Norris was next on his flying lap and with a personal best sector two slotted into third with his 1:16.115 with 24 minutes left on the clock.
Alonso with three personal bests moved up into ninth on his medium tyre stint after posting a 1:16.557 to split Antonelli and Williams’ Carlos Sainz with 21 minutes left on the clock.
Replays showed Albon run wide into turn four and over the rumble strip with the Thai-Briton driver telling the team to check the floor for damage aboard his FW47 racer.
The majority all returned back to the pits for their final setup adjustments before doing one last run with 16 minutes remaining.
Piastri was on his next qualifying simulation stint on the softs and with three purple sectors hit a 1:14.916 to be over 1.099 seconds ahead of second-placed Hamilton.
Hamilton with two personal bests posted a 1:15.684 to be 0.768 seconds adrift of Piastri’s effort whilst Norris with a purple final sector slotted into second and ended up 0.032 seconds off team-mate Piastri.
Stroll and Hulkenberg then jumped up into fourth and fifth respectively splitting the Ferrari duo of Hamilton and Leclerc whilst Verstappen abandoned his hot-lap on the softs.
Russell followed with two personal bests to take fourth place before being demoted down a place by his team-mate Antonelli’s 1:15.745 effort.
Alonso and Stroll then split the Mercedes duo in fifth and sixth respectively as Leclerc planted his Ferrari into third and 0.399 seconds adrift of Piastri’s benchmark effort.
Replays showed RB’s Liam Lawson suffer a spin at the final corner, but the Kiwi managed to continue and return back to the pits.
The session ended with Piastri at the top of the time-sheets and in-front of team-mate Norris as Leclerc completed the top three.
Hamilton took fourth and in-front of Antonelli who placed fifth and Aston Martin pairing Alonso and Stroll who ended final practice in sixth and seventh respectively.
The other Silver Arrow of Russell finished eighth overall whilst Sauber pairing Bortoleto and Hulkenberg rounded out the top ten.
