In Q3, Norris held provisional pole in the initial flyers scoring a personal best in sector one and two purples in the final two sectors to score a 1:15.227 and was 0.328 seconds quicker than Verstappen who got the fastest sector one effort as Piastri was a further 0.636 adrift of his McLaren team-mate in third.

As the light rain began falling for the final flyers, Piastri made two personal bests with a purple final sector to jump into second just 0.022 seconds shy of team-mate Norris as Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz pushed Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton down into fifth.

Verstappen was on course to improve on his flying lap, but as the Dutchman was about to cross the line, RB’s Yuki Tsunoda suffered a crash after exiting the turn five right-hander – the Japanese driver ran over the astroturf sending the VCARB01 into the air and hitting the barriers damaging the left side of the car and the front and rear wings bringing out the red flags with 2:13 left on the clock. The Dutchman was 0.046 off Norris’s benchmark at the time and sitting provisional third.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was sixth and ahead of the Aston Martin AMR24 entries of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll who were seventh and eighth respectively.

When the session resumed for the final flyers, all drivers bar Verstappen and the aforementioned Tsunoda went out and could not improve meaning all positions remained stable apart from Daniel Ricciardo jumping ahead of his RB team-mate to take ninth.

In the middle segment, which was topped by Norris, Hamilton survived being eliminated from the session by MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s Nico Hulkenberg who made a late improvement – but only missed out on a Q3 appearance by a slim 0.010 seconds.

Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas ended up 12th and missed out on Q3 by 0.077 seconds as Williams Racing’s Alexander Albon and Logan Sargeant followed in 13th and 14th respectively with the latter suffering a massive lock-up into turn one and damaged his front wing.

The other Haas VF-24 entry of Kevin Magnussen could not improve on his final flyer and ended up the slowest of the Q2 runners in 15th.

In the opening qualifying stage, which was topped by Ricciardo, a flurry of late improvements saw Magnussen send Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Mercedes’ George Russell out of Q1.

Perez despite his shunt at turn eight, which caused a red flag with 6:45 seconds left on the clock after taking too much kerb heading towards the left-hander, then spinning out and hitting the front and rear of his RB20 racer into the barrier, wound up 0.035 seconds off a Q2 spot in 16th.

Russell also was the shock eliminatee in 17th after not having enough fuel to complete another flyer as Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu and Alpine pairing Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly ended up in the last three places.

2024 Hungarian GP Pole Position – Lando Norris, #4, McLaren Formula 1 Team-Mercedes, MCL38 – 1:15 227:

“Not an easy qualifying, mixed conditions but happy and a 1-2 is even better to see. We’ve come into this weekend and the last few happy and confident we can fight for pole and that’s exactly what we’ve done. We are in the best position for whatever the conditions throw at us [tomorrow].”

2nd Place – Oscar Piastri, #81, McLaren Formula 1 Team-Mercedes, MCL38 – +0.022s:

“It’s cool to be here, especially when you get a result like this – the first 1-2 for McLaren in qualifying for a very long time. We had a tricky day on my side yesterday, so it was nice to bounce back. Qualifying wasn’t easy, a lot of decisions on the fly so it’s nice to end up where we’ve ended up. I’m happy with my day’s work, and it’s a long run down to Turn 1 so all still to play for.”

3rd Place – Max Verstappen, #1, Oracle Red Bull Racing, Honda-RBPT, RB20 – +0.046s:

“I tried, the whole weekend we have been a little bit behind and that was the case in qualifying. It just wasn’t enough, difficult to pin-point why that is. P3 is still very close, just have to hope the car is good in the race. I love competition, but I would like to be on top of the competition but at the moment I feel we are chasing, and I don’t back out of a fight but it’s trickier, I guess. With the rain today, tomorrow should be a different day and I just hope that will help us”
