#F1 Qualifying Report: @LandoNorris pips @Max33Verstappen to #SpanishGP pole by 0.020s.

Norris Spanish GP Pole – McLaren’s Lando Norris pipped championship leader Max Verstappen by just 0.020s to clinch his second-career pole position in a close qualifying at the Spanish GP as Mercedes’ Sir Lewis Hamilton completed the top three.

In Q3, Verstappen held provisional pole in the initial flyers posting personal bests in sectors one and two with a purple final sector to set a 1:11.673 and was 0.123 seconds quicker than Norris who scored three personal bests in all three sectors and Hamilton was a further 0.143 seconds adrift of the Dutchman in third.

 

In the final flying laps, Norris set a personal best in sectors one and three with a purple middle sector to post a 1:11.383 and pipped Verstappen who posted a personal best in sectors one and two with a purple final sector to set a 1:11.403 wounding up 0.020 seconds off the Briton.

 

Both Mercedes drivers followed with Hamilton and Russell in third and fourth respectively as the Ferrari duo occupy the third row of the grid with Charles Leclerc and home favourite Carlos Sainz fifth and sixth.

 

BWT Alpine F1 Team’s Pierre Gasly qualified seventh and ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez who took eighth, but the latter drops down to 11th for tomorrow’s Spanish Grand Prix due to his three-grid-placed-penalty.

 

The other Alpine and McLaren of Esteban Ocon and Oscar Piastri rounded out the top ten.

 

In the middle segment, which was topped by Verstappen, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso made a late improvement but just missed out on a Q3 appearance by only 0.019 seconds meaning the Spaniard will start his home Grand Prix in 11th. However, due to Perez’s three-grid-placed-penalty, Alonso will be promoted to tenth on the grid.)

 

Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu qualified 12th and 15th respectively as both MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s Nico Hulkenberg and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll split the duo in 13th and 14th.

 

In the opening qualifying stage, which was topped by Hamilton, MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen was the quickest of the Q1 eliminatees and missed out on a Q2 appearance by a slim 0.056 seconds to qualify 16th.

 

Both RB’s of Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo followed in 17th and 18th respectively as Williams Racing pairing Alexander Albon and Logan Sargeant brought up the rear.

 

Sargeant is also currently under investigation by the race stewards for his incident of impeding Stroll at turn ten with the former seen travelling slowly on the racing line.

2024 Spanish GP Pole – Lando Norris, #4, McLaren Formula 1 Team-Mercedes, MCL38 – 1:11.383:

“It was pretty much a perfect lap, I think. Close still, but super, super happy. I would say that was my best pole position. My supporters here are amazing so a big thanks to everyone sheering me on. We’ve been quick the last two months, since Miami we’ve been very strong. Super happy to be on pole. I know it will be tough against Max, against Lewis but we are here to win now.”

 

2nd Place – Max Verstappen, #1, Oracle Red Bull Racing, Honda-RBPT, RB20 – +0.020s:

“In qualifying it was all coming together a bit nicer, in the practice sessions it was a bit difficult. In Q3 I got a nice tow from Checo to extract everything, but it wasn’t enough. It is definitely all to play for tomorrow.”

 

3rd Place – Lewis Hamilton, #44, Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team, F1 W15 – +0.318s:

“I’m really happy. It’s been quite a difficult year but everyone back at the factory has worked so hard, finally we are starting to see those steps moving closer to those guys ahead. Slowly, the car is crafting into a racing machine that we can use to fight the cars ahead.”
