The World Driver’s Championship contenders for McLaren in Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were down in fifth and sixth respectively.

RB’s Liam Lawson was the first to lead the pack out on the C3 white-marked harder compounds.

The Kiwi registered the benchmark of a 1:38.637, as Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg’s slotted in second 0.001 seconds adrift of Lawson.

Piastri then moved to the top with a 1:36.253 as Sainz, Hajdar and Hulkenberg shuffled Lawson down to fifth.

Verstappen was next on the C3’s to go fastest on a 1:35.501 whilst Ferrari’s Sir Lewis Hamilton ended up 0.019 seconds off the Red Bull driver in second as Lawson jumped up to third whilst Norris slotted into fourth in the order ahead of team-mate Piastri as the session reached the sixth minute mark.

Replays showed Williams’ Alexander Albon return to the pits after his FW47 racer caught fire with the Grove based-outfit reporting it was a rear brake hardware issue.

Sauber’s Hulkenberg moved up to third with his 1:35.548 as Hadjar moved to P1 with his 1:34.329 but was edged by Verstappen’s 1:34.059 at the ninth minute mark of proceedings after setting a middle best sector.

Antonelli on his flyer with the mediums set three personal bests to take sixth with a 1:32.592 and ended up 0.780 seconds off Sainz’s benchmark as Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll came out first on the C5 red-marked softer tyres to begin his qualifying simulation run as the others also began venturing out on the softs.

Stroll with three personal bests could only manage 11th and was 1.222 seconds off Sainz’s best time.

Hamilton was next on his hot-lap with the softs and the Briton with a purple sector three moved back up to fourth to be 0.363 seconds off Alonso’s benchmark.

Alonso improved once again to set a 1:31.116 to be 0.150 seconds clear of Leclerc at the head of the time-sheets.
