Bad weather conditions have caused the cancellation of the opening Free Practice 1 session at the Eifel GP.

The opening practice session did begin at 11am local time but due to the low fog around the Nurburgring, the medical helicopter was unable to fly, meaning race control was forced to keep the pit-lane closed and the drivers could not do any running.

Initially the pit-lane was shut for the first 30 minutes of the hour-and-a-half-long session but as the fog had not cleared, it remained closed, and with an hour complete, race control instructed that the pit-lane would not open at all during opening practice, cancelling the session effectively.

Afternoon second practice is scheduled to go ahead at 3pm local time.

FIA Race Director Michael Masi explained that safety was the main concern when it came upon making the decision on delays during the session.

“It is a bit challenging, obviously, with the fog that’s come in, the medical helicopter is not able to take off and fly to the hospital,” Masi explained. “The distance by road is far too far should something occur,”

“Obviously the region that we’re in is probably not dissimilar to Austria, earlier in the year where we had a similar situation. It’s just the nature of the area and the location, and the fog’s come in, it’s sort of been going up slightly then coming down more dramatically,”

“We’ll just judge at the time and from an FIA perspective the safety of all the participants, particularly of the drivers coming out is paramount and that’s not something we will not compromise.” Masi concluded. Credit to Formula 1 for the quote.

The lack of running prevented Mick Schumacher and Callum Illott, the Ferrari Driver Academy drivers from making their F1 free practice debuts for Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and Haas F1 Team respectively.
