@LewisHamilton and @CharlesLeclerc disqualified from #USGP results following technical breach. #F1
Hamilton Leclerc Disqualified US GP – Mercedes’ Sir Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc were disqualified from the US GP. Following the Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, their cars were inspected, and irregularities were found by the FIA Technical Team after a plank wear inspection was undertaken.
The delegates report stated: “The skids located in the area -825 ≥ XR ≥ – 1025 are found to be not in compliance with Article 3.5.9 e) of the 2023 Formula One Technical Regulations.” Credit to F1 for the quote.
Thus, both cars were immediately referred to the race stewards.
Hamilton had finished a solid second-placed finish, charging in on a brake-issue plagued Red Bull RB19 entry of Max Verstappen all the way to the chequered flag. The Briton had been running a new floor at this race, with the Silver Arrows bringing their final major update of the year to Austin.
Leclerc reached the line in sixth place, a fraction in-front of the second F1 W14 entry of George Russell after falling back in the latter proceedings on the less-favour one-stop strategy.
Both teams sent representatives to the stewards reporting “The high wear on the skid pads was probably a result of the unique combination of the bumpy track and the Sprint race schedule that minimized the time to set up and check the car before the race.” Credit to F1 for the quote.
However, race officials stated “The onus is on the competitor to ensure that the car is in compliance with the regulations at all times during an event. In this particular case, the rear skid in the area defined in the Technical Delegate’s report was outside of the thresholds outlined in Article 3.5.9 e) of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations, which includes a tolerance for wear.” Credit to F1 for the quote.
The disqualification promoted McLaren’s Lando Norris into second and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz to third. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez moved up into fourth and extends his lead over Hamilton in the runner up spot in the World Driver’s Championship standings.
Russell jumps from seventh to fifth in the classification, with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly sixth and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll up to seventh in the order whilst AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda gets promoted to eighth and also scored the fastest lap of the race.
It also meant that both Williams Racing drivers scored a double-points finish, Alexander Albon inheriting ninth place and Logan Sargeant scoring his first world championship point in tenth on home soil.
