Opening practice pacesetter Hamilton had been the quickest at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on the C4 yellow-branded medium tyres during the earlier runs, but when he put on the softs, the Briton lost the rear of his F1 W10 EQ Power+ halfway through the turn eight and nine chicane.

The Silver Arrow slid sideways and whacked the wall with the right rear wheel, leaving Hamilton slowly travelling back to the pits with a puncture.

This caused Hamilton to miss the rest of the 90 minute session as the Mercedes crew went to work replacing the rear of his car.

The reigning champions were almost a second clear of it’s rivals in the morning run, but Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas was outpaced by the two Ferrari’s in the afternoon outing on the softer compound simulations.

Ferrari went out earlier than Mercedes for it’s initial laps, with Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel trading spots at the top of the time-sheets using the medium compounds before the Silver Arrows again pulled through almost a second quicker,

Bottas was using the C3 white side-walled hard rubber during that point, and was within three tenths of Hamilton’s effort on the mediums before improving to 0.142 seconds behind the Briton.

Though the Scuderia improved a little to get under seven tenths from Hamilton’s benchmark on the mediums, the session looked set to be as it was in the morning with Mercedes dominating.

Then as Hamilton clipped the wall, Bottas’ best time of a 1:12.311 on the softs was beaten by Ferrari’s Vettel initially with a 1:12.251 then Leclerc put his SF90 quickest on a 1:12.177.

The top three were covered by only 0.134 seconds with the two Ferrari’s occupying the first two places.

Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen used the harder compounds to sandwich in-between the Mercedes and Ferrari’s as the initial runs ended, but his soft tyre flyer was spoiled by team-mate Pierre Gasly who was moving slowly at the final chicane.

Verstappen understeered wide and touched the wall of champions, although the Dutchman managed to return back to the pits, his FP2 session was over and wound up 13th – only rejoining the track for a brief run in the closing stages of the afternoon.

With Hamilton and Verstappen stuck in the garage, and Gasly only good enough for 12th, McLaren’s Carlos Sainz ended the day in a high fourth place and just 0.376 adrift of Leclerc’s benchmark.

Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen was fifth and ahead of Hamilton whose medium compound run held him up in sixth.

Racing Point’s Sergio Perez and home-favourite Lance Stroll were seventh and tenth respectively with the two Renault’s of Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg eighth and ninth, sandwiched in-between the duo.

Stroll and Haas F1 Team’s Romain Grosjean late incident in the session with the former banging wheels with the latter at the final chicane is currently under investigation.

McLaren’s Lando Norris was 11th quickest and ahead of the two aforementioned Red Bull’s of Gasly and Verstappen.

The two Honda-powered Toro Rosso STR14’s of Alexander Albon and Daniil Kvyat followed in 14th and 15th respectively and in-front of Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen who was 16th and Grosjean’s 17th-placed Haas.

The other C38 Alfa Romeo Racing car of Antonio Giovinazzi missed almost an hour of FP2 while the Hinwil-based outfit had undergone a precautionary gearbox change on the Italian’s car following his opening practice shunt.

Giovinazzi ended up 18th and in-front of the two ROKiT Williams Racing FW42’s of George Russell and Robert Kubica who brought up the rear.
