McLaren Double Disqualification – McLaren Formula 1 Team duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix after both MCL39 entries were found not to comply with the technical regulations.

After the race, the rearmost skid wear on both McLaren MCL39 cars were found to be below the minimum 9-millimetre thickness by technical delegates on inspection.
The matter was referred to the race stewards, who subsequently disqualified both MCL39’s from the official race result, with Norris finishing second and Piastri fourth.
Confirming the disqualification of both McLaren drivers, the stewards documents stated:
“The rear skids of Car 4 and Car 81 were measured and found to be below the minimum thickness of 9mm specified under Article 3.5.9 of the Technical Regulations. The relevant measurements were RHS Front 8.88mm, RHS Rear 8.93mm. The measuring device was a Mitutoyo Micrometre purchased in May 2025, and according to the manufacturer’s specifications, accurate to within 0.001mm.
The rear skids were re-measured in the presence of the Stewards and the three McLaren representatives, and those measurements confirmed that the skids did not comply with the regulations. The relevant measurements were even lower than those measured originally by the Technical Delegate.
Accordingly, the Stewards determine that a breach of the Technical Regulations have occurred. The Stewards then heard submissions on penalty.
The Team argued that mitigating circumstances existed in that there was additional and unexpected porpoising at this event, limited opportunity to test due to the weather on Day 1 and shortened practice sessions. Further the Team submitted that the degree of the breach was lower than prior breaches of this regulation in 2025.
The FIA argued that unfortunately there was no provision in the regulations or in precedent for any penalty other than the usual penalty (i.e. disqualification). The FIA noted that it strongly held the view that the breach was unintentional and that there was not deliberate attempt to circumvent the regulations.” Credit to the FIA for the quote.
McLaren were not the only team to be hit with a disqualification from skid block infringements this season, with Ferrari’s Sir Lewis Hamilton and Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg also excluded from the Chinese and Bahrain Grands Prix for similar transgressions.
Norris started on pole for the Las Vegas GP and aggressively moved over on Red Bull’s Max Verstappen off the line before running too deep into the opening corner and dropping to third.
Eventually recovering to second place, Norris fell back drastically in the final tours as he was told to lift and coast by his team over a possible fuel issue.
His team-mate Piastri, had recovered from falling to seventh on lap one after contact with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson into turn one, crossing the line fifth but initially being promoted a position after Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli was handed a five-second penalty for his false start.
After the post-race investigation and verdict, it means Las Vegas Grand Prix winner Max Verstappen has made a significant gain in the World Driver’s Championship standings, as the four-time world champion is now equal with Piastri on 366 points.
Norris is 24 points clear and sitting on 390 points at the head of the standings with a Sprint race and two Grands Prix to go and 58 points still up for grabs to decide this year’s World Driver’s Champion.
