Verstappen lead the way in both Q1 and Q2 sessions and looked to be on course for a clean sweep as the Dutchman also topped the time-sheets before the final flyers in the last qualifying stage.

Verstappen posted the quickest opening sector of Q3 on his final hot-lap, but lost time and could not improve on his personal best.

This meant the points leader was unable to get back in-front of Sainz, who was shocked to take pole position in his 150th Grand Prix start, and an effort of a 1:40.983, which he said, “felt terrible”, despite setting the fastest times in sectors two and three.

Leclerc ended up third as he spun through Chapel heading onto the Hangar Straight on his last flying tour, after he had appeared to be Verstappen’s closest challenger for the pole before Sainz surprised everyone – including himself as he asked his race engineer “how did I do P1?” after crossing the line – to claim first place on the grid.

The other Red Bull RB18 entry of Sergio Perez took fourth, in-front of Mercedes’ Sir Lewis Hamilton and McLaren’s Lando Norris, both of whom had high placings on the order through the early proceedings of qualifying, which was wet throughout after the rain soaked the famous Silverstone Circuit in the 15 minutes ahead of the 3pm qualifying local start time.

Then followed Alpine F1 Team’s Fernando Alonso in seventh, Mercedes’ George Russell in eighth and Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Gunayu progressing through to the final qualifying stage for the second race weekend in a row and ended up ninth on the grid.

Williams Racing’s Nicholas Latifi was stoked to make his first Q3 appearance, but the Canadian did not register a time in the last segment and wound-up 10th and last of the top ten shootout runners.

In Q2, it began with rain starting to fall harder again after it stopped by the end of the initial qualifying stage, which put on a load of fast, early banker efforts.

This almost caught out Sainz as he hung in the elimination zone after the first laps in the middle segment, but the Spaniard was able to climb up the classification at the mid-way point, after which the rain was falling even harder meaning no drivers were able to improve and the elimination order was set in stone.

AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly qualified outside the top ten in 11th place and in-front of Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas who placed 12th and team-mate Yuki Tsunoda who takes 13th on the grid.

McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo and Alpine F1 Team’s Esteban Ocon were the slowest of the Q2 runners and start the British GP in 14th and 15th on the grid respectively.

In the first segment which was topped by Verstappen, it began with the rain falling steadily, but the field emerged on the green-marked intermediates, which was the favoured compound throughout qualifying and the drivers were fuelled to circulate the Silverstone Circuit throughout all sessions.

All five of the drivers eliminated in Q1 posted their best efforts at the end in the better conditions of the whole qualifying session, but could not improve to progress into Q2, as Williams Racing’s Alexander Albon was the quickest of the Q1 eliminatees and will start 16th and ahead of Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen who was 17th.

Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll qualified 18th and at the rear with Haas F1 Team’s Mick Schumacher splitting the pairing in 19th.

2022 British GP Pole – Carlos Sainz, #55, Scuderia Ferrari, F1-75, 1:40.983:

“It was a good lap, but I was struggling a lot with the standing water. It was very easy to get snaps and lose the temperature in the intermediate tyres.”

2nd Place – Max Verstappen, #1, Oracle Red Bull Racing-RBPT, RB18, +0.072:

“It was quite a tricky qualifying with the rain, you had to be on the track at the right time. I think still to be on the front row is very good for us and we have a good race car in the dry and the wet.”

3rd Place – Charles Leclerc, #16, Scuderia Ferrari, F1-75, +0.315:

“Yeah, I am but happy for Carlos he did a great job today. I spun in that last lap, and I knew that was the lap you had to put as a driver, and I didn’t today so I didn’t deserve it today. The pace is there so if we have a good car everything should go well.”

In the earlier FP3 session it was a Red Bull one-two with Verstappen topping the time-sheets ahead of team-mate Perez with Ferrari’s Leclerc third as Mercedes duo Russell and Hamilton rounded out the top five.
