@Max33Verstappen pips @CharlesLeclerc to home #DutchGP pole by narrow 0.021 seconds. #F1
Verstappen Dutch GP Pole – Red Bull’s Max Verstappen pipped Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to take pole position at his home Dutch GP with the other F1-75 entry of Carlos Sainz completing the top three as the session ended under a yellow flag when Sergio Perez spun his RB18, denying the Mercedes pairing a last shot at the pole.
Verstappen ended up with the pole after reversing Leclerc’s benchmark from the initial Q3 flyers, with the session disrupted by fans throwing flares onto the circuit, causing the second segment to be suspended.
Leclerc held provisional pole with a purple in the first two sectors and a personal best in the final part to set a 1:10.456 and ended up 0.059 seconds quicker than home favourite Verstappen who had the better sector three effort with Hamilton a further 0.192 in third.
Leclerc posted the quickest efforts in sector one and three on his final hot-lap, being unable to replicate his best time in the middle part of the tour, which costed the Ferrari driver.
This was because Verstappen flew to a purple and wound up with the best effort of a 1:10.342 and was a narrow 0.021 seconds quicker than Leclerc.
Sainz ended up third just before Perez spun after dipping his left wheels into the gravel out of the penultimate corner and ended up beached at the inside of the banking on the last turn.
This meant the Mercedes duo had to list off, so Sir Lewis Hamilton took fourth ahead of Perez with George Russell sixth in the other Silver Arrows F1 W13 entry.
McLaren’s Lando Norris placed seventh and in-front of Haas F1 Team’s Mick Schumacher who ended up eighth in the classification and AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda who was ninth and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll who completed the top ten.
Stroll however, was unable to run in Q3 following a technical problem to his AMR22 entry with his mechanics looking at the damper of his car before the session went green.
The final segment saw flare smoke blowing from the pit-exit but covered by a brief yellow flag ahead of the final flying laps.
In Q2, which was topped by Sainz, the session was delayed for seven minutes after another lit flare from the grandstands overlooking the turn 12 exit and the last part of the Circuit Zandvoort’s stadium section was thrown onto the track.
Sport’s governing body, the FIA, said the person who threw the flare was “identified and removed by event security”, stopped the action until it was removed.
During the suspension, marshals attempted to clear the pigeons that had settled at the inside of turn’s seven corner, which Williams Racing’s Alexander Albon noted he ran by himself at the beginning of Q2 before the flare was cleared.
AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly made a late improvement but was only enough to jump Alpine’s Esteban Ocon to take 11th with the other A522 entry of Fernando Alonso 13th.
Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN’s Zhou Guanyu took 14th as Williams Racing’s Albon was the slowest of the Q2 runners in 15th.
In the first segment, which was topped by Verstappen, Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas was the quickest of the Q1 eliminatees placing 16th and in-front of McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo who was 17th with Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen wounding up 18th.
Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel had a moment out of the penultimate corner on his final flyer running into the gravel and ended up a low-19th as Williams Racing’s Nicholas Latifi brought up the rear.

2022 Dutch GP Qualifying – The Top Three
2022 Dutch GP Pole Position – Max Verstappen, #1, Oracle Red Bull Racing-RBPT, RB18, 1:10.342:
“Unbelievable! Especially after yesterday, we worked really well overnight to turn it around. A qualifying lap around here is insane. Today the car was enjoyable to drive.”
2nd Place – Charles Leclerc, #16, Scuderia Ferrari, F1-75, +0.021:
“Max did a great lap in the end; our car was getting better and better. In the beginning I was scared because Max was much quicker than us on used tyres. We are much stronger here compared to last weekend, and our race pace looks quite strong. We need to do a great start and then we’ll see.”
3rd Place – Carlos Sainz, #55, Scuderia Ferrari, F1-75, +0.092:
“It was a clean lap with no mistakes, just missing that last half a tenth. It was on the limit out there; it wasn’t an easy qualy, but in the end we did a decent job. It is very tough out there; the track is especially demanding on the tyres. Tomorrow should be an interesting day, there will be a lot going on and many options with strategies.”
In the earlier FP3 session, Ferrari’s Leclerc topped the time-sheets narrowly ahead of Mercedes’ Russell with points leader Verstappen rounding out the top three as the other F1-75 entry of Sainz was fourth and the second Mercedes W13 of Hamilton completed the top five.
