@Max33Verstappen snatches #F1Sprint victory from @CharlesLeclerc to claim #EmiliaRomagnaGP pole. #F1
Verstappen F1 Sprint pole – Red Bull’s Max Verstappen stole victory from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc late on in the F1 Sprint to claim the Emilia Romagna GP pole.
The reigning world champion used his C4 red-marked softer compounds until the final seven laps of the 21 toured sprint to make a late charge when it looked as though Leclerc was comfortably in control.
With DRS assistance and as his rival battled oversteer, Verstappen went around the outside of the Ferrari into the Tamburello Chicane and kept his RB18 on track to take the win and pole for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
When the 21-lap F1 Sprint got underway, Leclerc got a solid run off the line and with the kink on the pit-straight putting him on the inside, he could fly past a wheel-spinning Red Bull of Verstappen to take first place into Tamburello.
Verstappen had to ensure that he’ll keep McLaren’s Lando Norris behind as he threatened the Red Bull around the outside into Tamburello, but the reigning world champion remained firm.
A very aggressive Red Bull of Sergio Perez relegated Alpine’s Fernando Alonso and then jumped past McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo for a rapid move to fifth, whilst Ricciardo in turn briefly tangled with Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen.
But the opening tour was interrupted by a yellow flag then a full deployment of the safety car following the collision between 14th-placed Alfa Romeo of Zhou Guanyu and AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly, who lined-up in 17th on the grid.
At the left-hand Piratella, the front-right of Gasly’s AT03 clipped the rear wheel of Zhou’s C42 racer, which sent it spinning off the circuit and into the wall.
Zhou’s C42 suffered suspension damage, whilst Gasly continued with a broken wheel rim, travelling slowly back to the pits and put on another set of softer rubber to continue behind Williams Racing’s Alexander Albon in 18th.
When the safety car came in, Leclerc pulled away without any threat from Verstappen as the championship leader quickly built a lead over one second to keep out of DRS range.
Leclerc settled in over the one second mark for three laps and then on the seventh tour, posted what was at the time the fastest lap of the sprint to increase his advantage to 1.5 seconds over the Dutchman.
It looked as though Verstappen might struggle to respond, but then the gap began to be cut back by Verstappen thanks to a string of personal best efforts.
Leclerc did not make an error, as Verstappen brought the gap to below a second and the used DRS assistance and the slipstream out of the final corner to bring the lead down to under half a second.
But in his charge, Verstappen suffered a hit of oversteer to allow the gap to increase to 0.8 seconds again, before Leclerc’s soft tyre began to degrade as he too went wide at Villeneuve.
This brought Verstappen close out of Rivazza and gave him the slip-stream, which combined with DRS assistance, allowed the Dutchman to make his move around the outside into the Tamburello Chicane.
Leclerc gave Verstappen space at the first apex, and the Red Bull driver kept within the painted lines to make the move stick before flying to a 1.5 second lead before securing the victory by 2.975 seconds.
Meanwhile, it was Verstappen’s Red Bull team-mate Perez who could make major gains after his struggles in the wet qualifying session, which had the Mexican starting seventh.
Perez flew past a defenceless Haas VF-22 of Kevin Magnussen – both Haas drivers and Williams Racing’s Nicholas Latifi the only cars to start on the C3 yellow-branded mediums -into Tamburello Chicane for fourth.
Perez kept putting the slipstream on out of the final corner for the run into the chicane into great use as he then copied the move on Norris with the help of DRS assistance to take third.
The other Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, starting tenth after his Q2 crash, could make similar progression, first passing Alonso – who at first struggled to leave his grid spot on the formation tour – into the Tamburello Chicane.
Sainz could then make a move on the medium tyre-running Magnussen, then Ricciardo before eating up a five-second gap to Norris to overtake the McLaren for a fourth-placed start in the Emilia Romagna GP.
Norris lead Ricciardo home for a McLaren fifth and sixth placed start for the race and will start ahead of Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas who takes seventh and Haas F1 Team’s Magnussen who is eighth.
Alpine’s Alonso starts ninth and in-front of the second Haas VF-22 entry of Mick Schumacher who completes the top ten.
Mercedes pairing George Russell and Sir Lewis Hamilton will start the Grand Prix in 11th and 14th places respectively with AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda and Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel splitting the pairing in 12th and 13th on the grid.
The other Aston Martin AMR22 of Lance Stroll starts 15th and ahead of Alpine F1 Team’s Esteban Ocon who is 16th and the aforementioned Gasly who takes 17th.
Williams Racing pairing Albon and Latifi will start in 18th and 19th places respectively as Zhou starts at the rear.
2022 Emilia Romagna GP F1 Sprint – The Top Three
2022 Emilia Romagna GP F1 Sprint Winner – Max Verstappen, #1, Oracle Red Bull Racing-RBPT, RB18:
“I think we were better on our tyres at the end of the race. It was fast, I was pushing quite a bit. Yeah, the start was really bad, I don’t know why, maybe too much wheelspin. I think Charles ran out of tyres, today it worked out for us to be on this compound, but I don’t know about tomorrow. I’m of course happy about today, but tomorrow might be a bit different.”
2nd Place – Charles Leclerc, #16, Scuderia Ferrari, F1-75:
“It’s still a front row start, we struggled with the tyres at the end, we need to analyse that. We will work and come back strong tomorrow. Every time we are in Italy, we have so much support, it’s amazing.”
3rd Place – Sergio Perez, #11, Oracle Red Bull Racing-RBPT, RB18:
“We needed to minimise the damage from yesterday. Today we managed to recover so we should be in the fight tomorrow. It would be ideal to get a 1-2, that would be great for us, probably not for the Tifosi, but we try!”
