Sebastian Vettel pipped team-mate Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari one-two at a red-flag affected Brazilian GP FP2 at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in Sao Paulo.

Vettel hit the top early on when using the medium compounds, setting a 1:09.570 – which was a quarter of a second faster than team-mate Leclerc.

When the field swapped to the softer rubber for their qualifying simulation runs, Vettel at first struggled to improve after hitting traffic on his initial flyer.

This allowed Leclerc to swipe the top of the pile with a 1:09.238 before Vettel reclaimed P1 with a 1:09.217 benchmark.

Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen was one of the last runners to start his qualifying simulation run, moving to third and was 0.134 seconds off of Vettel’s Brazilian GP FP2 benchmark.

The Dutchman posted the quickest middle sector time in the session on that lap but lost down on the Ferrari’s in the power-reliant final sector.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport pairing Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton finished the afternoon in fourth and fifth respectively, with the former 0.156 adrift of Vettel’s Brazilian GP FP2 pace.

Hamilton was a further 0.223 seconds off and the newly crowned six-time World Champion was unable to set a lap time until his third attempt, with one lap abandoned at the Senna S after going deep to avoid Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly, which was attempting to let the Briton by.

Haas F1 Team’s Kevin Magnussen took a surprise sixth and ahead of Renault F1 Team’s Daniel Ricciardo who ended the day seventh.

Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen was one of the first in the field to set a qualifying simulation run, which momentarily put the Finn up in fifth before falling down to eighth.

Red Bull Racing’s Alexander Albon had a difficult FP2 and only made a minor improvement on his medium-tyre pace when using the softs, which saw the Thai-Briton driver shuffled down to ninth.

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz completed the top ten and finished in-front of Renault’s 11th-placed Nico Hulkenberg who was 1.108 seconds adrift of Vettel’s Brazilian GP FP2 benchmark time.

The two Toro Rosso’s of Gasly and Daniil Kvyat were 12th and 14th respectively with Alfa Romeo Racing’s Antonio Giovinazzi sandwiched in-between the duo in 13th.

Gasly suffered an engine failure as he parked his STR14 racer on the straight out of turn three with plooms of smoke coming out of the rear, which deployed the brief Virtual Safety Car.

Gasly’s team-mate Kvyat also suffered an engine issue to his Honda-powered STR14, which saw the Russian have a similar incident to Albon’s shunt in FP1 at Juncao but crashed into the barriers rearwards, and brought out the session-ending red flag.

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team’s Sergio Perez ended afternoon practice in 15th place.

Haas F1 Team’s Romain Grosjean finished FP2 in 16th place and in-front of Racing Point’s 17th-placed Lance Stroll and McLaren’s Lando Norris who took a low 18th.

The ROKiT Williams Racing FW42’s of George Russell and Robert Kubica ended FP2 the rear with the latter bringing out an earlier red flag during the session.

Kubica clipped the line just on the apex of turn three and lost the rear, which sent his FW42 into the wall.
