The Silver Arrows have won eight consecutive Constructors Championships in a row since the 1.6L V6 Turbocharged Hybrid era began in 2014, but they relinquished the World Driver’s Championship to Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen who snatched it on the final lap of the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year.

Mercedes Young Driver Programme Graduate George Russell has been promoted to the race seat alongside seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton in an all British line-up. with the former replacing Valtteri Bottas after three impressive campaigns at Williams, peaking with a maiden podium at last year’s Belgian Grand Prix.

Hamilton explained at the launch:

“It just takes you back to being a kid, I think it’s always exciting watching, I mean with this new era of car, we’ve never seen such a drastic change, right?”

“So it’s such a huge change in so many ways, that it’s just been really interesting seeing the designers and everyone coming together to find the best ways of creating a masterpiece.” Hamilton concluded. Credit to Mercedes for the quote.

Team-mate Russell added:

“It feels incredible, obviously Lewis and I have driven so many laps in the simulator of this. We’ve seen all the drawings, we’ve had so many meetings and presentations about it, but suddenly seeing it all come together, seeing all of the men and women who have put so much hard work and grit into making this, and coming together here, I think it looks incredible,”

“And I think the silver [coming] back, we’ve had an incredible livery with the black in the past couple of years – but the silver back on track I think is going to look incredible.” Russell concluded. Credit to Mercedes for the quote.

The F1 W13 E Performance hits the track for the first time this afternoon at Silverstone, in the first of two permitted filming days.

Hamilton and Russell will share driving duties, with track running limited to 100 kilometres.

Hamilton continued:

“We have no idea how it’s going to handle; we have driven laps in the simulator, but making sure that we make the right correlation, that’s why – I think George is out first today – I think I’ll be after him!” Hamilton concluded. Credit to Mercedes for the quote.

The F1 W13 E Performance is the product of a complete redesign from top-to-bottom, with the steering wheel the only carry-over element from it’s predecessor, the F1 W12 EQ Performance.

Team Principal and CEO of Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team Toto Wolff explained:

“Ever since work on W13 began, I have seen an excited enthusiasm in our team members like never before, thanks to the scale of opportunity that these technical regulations provide. Towards the end of the year when the car build project truly came together, I felt a deep passion across the whole organisation, not only in the technical arena but across our bases at Brackley and Brixworth who were embracing a mindset of ‘we can do this,”

“We did pretty well during the last big regulatory change into the hybrid era and performed well when we went from the narrow to the wide cars in 2017. While we have a good track record, my message is clear: we can’t rely on past success for this year’s performance, but we can rely on our people, our culture, our structure, and our mindset to do the best possible job for 2022.” Wolff concluded. After it’s shakedown at Silverstone, the F1 W13 E Performance will then travel to the Circuit De Barcelona-Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain for three days of pre-season testing from Wednesday February 23-Friday February 25, followed by the second three-day test in Bahrain next month, ahead of the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix from Friday March 18-Sunday March 20.
