A day after rivals Ferrari show-cased their latest contender, the Silver Arrows presented their car they hope will return them back to race victories and title glory after their 2022 struggles, which saw them slip from champions to third in the Constructor’s Championship.

Team Boss Toto Wolff, along with drivers Sir Lewis Hamilton and George Russell (who team together for the second year), and new reserve Mick Schumacher were in attendance and loved the look of the beautiful returning black livery they last used in 2020 and 21 after adorning the traditional silver in the previous campaign.

As touched on, the Silver Arrows enter the 2023 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season looking to bounce back following a difficult year in 2022, which began with severe porpoising issues, but eventually saw them return to winning ways courtesy of George Russell in Brazil – and third in the Constructor’s Championship – through hardwork and a fair amount of updates to the F1 W13.

Speaking at the launch Wolff explained:

Our hopes and expectations are always to be capable of fighting for a World Championship. However, our competitors were very strong last year, and we are playing catch-up,”

“Racing at the front requires resilience, teamwork, and determination. We face up to every challenge, we put the team first, and we will leave no stone unturned in the chase for every millisecond. This year, we are going all in to get back in front.” Wolff concluded. Credit to Mercedes for the quote.

As for the return to a black livery, which is mostly exposed carbon fibre to shed as much overall weight as possible, Wolff continued:

We were overweight last year. This year we have tried to figure out where we can squeeze out every single gram. So now, history repeats itself. You will see that the car has some raw carbon bits, along with some that are painted matte black,”

“Of course, when we changed the livery in 2020 the main driving factor was to support the diversity and equality causes which are always close to our heart. The colour black became part of our DNA at that point, so we are pleased to return to it.” Wolff concluded. Credit to Mercedes for the quote.

Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton added:

“I have been a part of this team for over a decade and the efforts of everyone never cease to amaze me, I find it inspiring how diligently and passionately each person approaches their work.” Hamilton concluded. Credit to Mercedes for the quote.

Russell further commented the amazing progress the Brackley-based outfit made over the past season, and his thoughts on the new F1 W14:

“I have been incredibly impressed with how the Team developed the car throughout last season. We have been building momentum throughout 2022 and we’re excited to see how that has progressed over the winter. Aesthetically it looks great! It’s bold, aggressive and stands out.” Russell concluded. Credit to Mercedes for the quote.

Hamilton added his thoughts on his new office:

To see the evolution of the car and the changes that have been made is fascinating.  We’ve redesigned, optimised, and innovated so many parts of the car and that is impressive. And I love the new livery! It says, ‘we mean business'”. Hamilton concluded. Credit to Mercedes for the quote.

Last season saw Russell claim his maiden pole position and Grand Prix victory, and the Briton is keen to hit the ground running and eyeing further success in 2023:

It’s been a long winter and there’s plenty of anticipation to see if the W14 lives up to our expectations. I’m excited and, while there’s a lot of talk at this point in the season, we now need to see how we perform when the car takes to the track.” Russell concluded. Credit to Mercedes for the quote.

For Hamilton, his motivation is strong than ever as he looks to fight back hard after his first winless season of his career:

“I’m excited to go racing again. I feel calm, energised, and have my focus sharpened. I’m ready to do what’s necessary to win.” Hamilton concluded. Credit to Mercedes for the quote.

Mercedes will conduct their initial shakedown of their F1 W14 today at Silverstone before heading over to the Bahrain International Circuit for pre-season testing from Thursday February 23-Saturday February 25 followed by the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix a week later.
