Hamilton Hungarian GP FP2 – Eight-time Hungarian GP winner Sir Lewis Hamilton lead from team-mate Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari one-two in FP2 as reigning world champion Lando Norris completed the top three. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli was unable to set a representative qualifying simulation time after abandoning his flying lap due to a red flag from Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and also suffering a snap of oversteer through the turns six and seven chicane.
Seven-time World Champion Hamilton on the C5 Pirelli red side-walled softer compounds posted the session-topping benchmark of a 1:18.729 and was 0.148 seconds clear of team-mate Leclerc whilst Norris was a further 0.499 seconds off the lead Ferrari driver.
Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas lead the pack out on the C4 yellow-marked medium tyres.
The Finn registered the early benchmark of a 1:38.707 which was beaten by Alpine’s Franco Colapinto’s 1:23.553 and was ousted by team-mate Pierre Gasly’s 1:23.051 effort.
As RB’s Liam Lawson hit a 1:22.000, Leclerc went fastest on a 1:20.103 but momentarily as Hamilton went even quicker posting a 1:19.648 after setting three purple sectors.
Reigning world champion Norris pushed to third on a 1:20.897 with three personal bests.
Russell was next and the Mercedes driver with three personal best efforts was up to fourth on a 1:21.352.
Verstappen with three personal bests jumped to third on a 1:20.409 as his team-mate Isack Hadjar slotted in behind – posting 1:20.704.
Replays showed Piastri run wide at turn 11.
Leclerc with the best middle sector remained in second place despite improving, a 1:19.720 and the Monegasque driver was 0.072 adrift of leading team-mate Hamilton.
Norris was next and despite a personal best sector one and the best sector two time remained fourth and was sitting 1.249 seconds off Hamilton’s benchmark.
Piastri with three personal bests moved behind his team-mate into fifth setting a 1:21.127 as Verstappen with a personal best final sector remained third and 0.588 seconds off Hamilton.
Russell with two personal bests was up to fourth on a 1:20.472 as Hamilton with a personal best sector one improved to a 1:19.585 to be 0.135 seconds clear of Leclerc at the top of the pile.
Leclerc despite two personal bests was unable to improve on his next flyer as championship leader Antonelli moved up to sixth place with two personal bests and setting a 1:21.027 as Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg on the hard placed seventh with a 1:21.067.
Replays showed Williams’ Alexander Albon suffer a snap of oversteer and he jumped over the kerbs at the chicane.
Russell improved his position in fourth posting a 1:20.412 with two personal best final sectors whilst Piastri with three personal bests set a 1:20.798 effort.
The majority of the field as the session approached the 20th-minute-mark returned to the pits to adjust their setups to prepare for their qualifying simulation stints on the C5 softer compounds.
Replays showed Leclerc suffer a front-right lock-up into the turn 12 left hander, the Monegasque driver aborted his hot-lap and returned to the pits.
Championship leader Antonelli with two personal bests moved to fifth place on a 1:20.693.
At the 22nd-minute mark of proceedings, reigning world champion Norris emerged on the C5 softer tyres to begin his qualifying simulation stint.
Norris with two purple opening sectors and a personal best final sector took P1 with a 1:19.228 as Audi’s Hulkenberg was up to fifth on a 1:20.141 whilst Verstappen jumped to second to be 0.193 down on Norris.
Lawson pushed his VCARB03 entry to seventh with a 1:20.370 only briefly as Lindblad pipped his team-mate on a 1:20.141.
Hadjar with two personal bests improved to fifth with a 1:19.800 as Russell demoted the Frenchman with the fourth best time setting a 1:19.662.
The red flag was brought out with 32 minutes and 29 remaining after Colapinto suffered a whack into the wall at the final corner damaging his front wing.
Replays showed the Argentine driver lost the rear and spun into the final corner and the rear of his A526 racer hit the barrier.
When the session resumed with 26 minutes remaining after Colapinto’s Alpine was cleared – Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto lead the pack out on a fresh set of the C5 red-marked softer rubber.
Championship leader Antonelli had to abandon his flyer on a hot lap after suffering a snap through the turns six and seven chicane.
Lindblad with two personal bests was up to eighth on a 1:20.253 as team-mate Lawson moved into seventh with a 1:20.041 and Hulkenberg split the pairing with a 1:20.125.
Leclerc was next and with the best final sector shot to the head of the time-sheets setting a 1:18.877 as his team-mate Hamilton slotted into second with a 1:18.914 and the best opening sector and two personal bests.
Haas’s Oliver Bearman with three personal bests moved to 13th overall to be 2.073 seconds off Leclerc’s benchmark on a 1:20.950.
Gasly was next to snatch 13th off Bearman setting a 1:20.816 effort with three personal bests.
Hamilton was next with a personal best middle sector and purple sector three went fastest on a 1:18.729 to be 0.148 seconds in-front of team-mate Leclerc.
Replays showed Verstappen hit some debris with his front wing.
With less than 15 minutes remaining, the entire field continued to circulate around the Hungaroring on a mix of the mediums and harder rubber to do their traditional long race data gathering runs.
The session ended with Hamilton ahead of team-mate Leclerc as Norris rounded out the top three.
Four-time World Champion Verstappen was fourth and in-front of Russell who placed fifth and Hadjar who ended FP2 sixth.
RB’s Lawson was next in seventh as Piastri took eighth in the other MCL40 entry.
Hulkenberg and Lindblad completed the top ten.
