Norris set the session-topper of s 1:15.624 on the C5 red side-walled softer tyres and was 0.291 seconds quicker than Piastri whilst Leclerc was a further 0.399 seconds off in third.

Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg returned to the cockpit of his C45 after sitting out FP1 and was the first out on the C4 yellow-marked medium compounds.

Hulkenberg was the first to register the benchmark with a 1:19.487 but was beaten by Haas’s Esteban Ocon who posted a 1:19.032, which was then beaten by team-mate Oliver Bearman’s 1:18.327 then Franco Colapinto put his Alpine on top with a 1:18.209.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso then eclipsed that with a 1:18.140 then Lance Stroll ousted his team-mate posting a 1:18.005 with the Williams duo of Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz all briefly being P1.

Mercedes’ George Russell then shot to the head of the times with two final purple sectors posting a 1:17.442 as RB’s Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson were in second and third respectively and both 0.024 and 0.203 adrift.

Stroll with a purple opening sector and two PB’s slotted into third as Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda demoted the Canadian to fourth with his 1:17.645.

Ferrari’s Leclerc then jumped to P1 with two purples with a 1:17.781 as his team-mate Sir Lewis Hamilton moved to fourth to be 0.377 seconds off his team-mate as Piastri with a purple sector three slotted into fifth.

Norris then planted his MCL39 quickest with a 1:16.916 as the session reached the tenth minute mark. The Briton was 0.265 clear of Leclerc.

Hulkenberg on his medium tyres, set three personal bests moved into ninth overall to wound up 0.803 seconds off Norris’s benchmark.

Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli was next with three personal bests jumped to second in the order, posting a 1:17.147 to go 0.231 seconds off the McLaren driver.

Leclerc then improved to a 1:17.143 with a purple sector one but remained third as Piastri shot to P1 with a 1:16.697 to be 0.219 seconds quicker than team-mate Norris.

Verstappen put his Red Bull eighth in the classification with three personal bests and was 0.918 seconds off Piastri’s benchmark as Hamilton with two personal best sectors one and two remained in seventh place behind Russell.

Norris was next on another flying tour with his mediums setting two purple sectors to go even faster setting a 1:16.525 on the 17th minute mark of the session.

Albon followed with three personal bests to slot into sixth splitting Hadjar and Russell and was 0.896 off of Norris’s benchmark.

Both Leclerc and Piastri then went on another hot lap but were unable to improve as the majority returned to the pits for a brief lull in action to adjust their setups and put in a small amount of fuel with a set of the C5 softer tyres to begin their qualifying simulation runs.

Replays showed Hamilton running off through the chicane.

Williams’ Sainz was the first to lead the field out on the softs and with a purple opening sector and two personal bests shot to third with a 1:16.874 to go 0.3349 off Norris’s medium tyre benchmark.

Stroll followed on his flyer on the softs posting a purple sector one and three and a personal best in sector two to go quickest with a 1:16.221 and was 0.304 seconds ahead of Norris.

Hulkenberg moved into fourth as Piastri with two purples reclaimed P1 with a 1:15.915 to be 0.306 seconds clear as Antonelli slotted into third and was 0.605 seconds off Piastri’s time.

Hadjar then split Stroll and Antonelli as the Frenchman jumped to third whilst Norris with two purples went even faster with a 1:15.624 to be 0/291 seconds in-front of team-mate Piastri.

Hamilton was down in fifth and 0.848 seconds off on his flyer as Russell put his Mercedes fourth and 0.793 seconds adrift off Norris’s benchmark.

Leclerc was next with three personal bests to set a 1:16.645 and was over half-a-second off of Norris’s time-topping effort.

Stroll followed with two personal bests to pip Leclerc into third and ended up 0.495 seconds off Norris.

Alonso was next and jumped up into fifth posting a 1:16.233.

Meanwhile replays showed Verstappen throw a towel out of his RB21 racer with the stewards currently investigating the issue.

Hamilton followed on another hot-lap with a purple sector one and moved up into sixth to wound up 0.705 seconds off Norris’s benchmark with 21 minutes left on the clock,

Leclerc was up next posting two personal bests and slotted back into third on a 1:16.023 as replays showed Norris have a scary moment into the final corner run-off area.

Russell on his out-lap commented “Ooooh Norris” as he saw his fellow Countryman’s off-track excursion.

The entire field then returned back to the pits with 18 minutes remaining to adjust their setups once more, putting on sets of medium and harder tyres and a heavier amount of fuel to prepare for their traditional long race data gathering runs.

As Sainz emerged, there were problems for Williams as the Spaniard was told to pit as he had lost telemetry. But Sainz could not hear as he remained out on circuit.

Hamilton stayed on the soft tyre – which was nine laps old at this stage Bearman was also on the red-marked tyre, but everyone else has reverted back to their original medium or hard tyres for their long runs.

Sainz then was told a couple of laps in that his telemetry was back and to stay on track as Leclerc kicked up dust at turn 12.

Verstappen reported to his team “I don’t know what is going on, it is undriveable. I can’t get any balance,” with the Dutchman down in 14th.

Replays showed a very close call between the two McLaren drivers out of the opening corner – Piastri swept around the outside of Norris, who locked up seemingly in surprise at his teammate’s manoeuvre.

The session ended with Norris fastest ahead of team-mate Piastri as Leclerc rounded out the top three.

The two Aston Martin’s of Stroll and Alonso ended the day in fourth and fifth respectively whilst Hamilton was next in the order taking sixth.

Russell placed seventh in the classification and ahead of Hadjar who took eighth.

Tsunoda and Antonelli completed the top ten runners.
