Russell Dutch Sprint Victory – Mercedes’ George Russell captured his third Sprint victory of the season at the Dutch GP ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc whilst reigning World Champion Lando Norris came home third for McLaren keeping championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli at bay.

Russell remains third in the standings – but clawed back three points off Mercedes team-mate Antonelli in the battle for the World Driver’s Championship bringing it down to 56 points.

Antonelli’s lead over second-placed Sir Lewis Hamilton in the championship increased to 53 points with the former taking fourth and Hamilton seventh.

When the 24-lap Dutch GP 100-kilometre Sprint Race began, pole-sitter Russell got a good start and covered Norris into Tarzan as championship leader Antonelli jumped past Piastri to take fourth place.

Antonelli had a look on the inside of Leclerc into turn nine, but the latter covered the former to keep third place.

The beginning of the second tour saw Russell’s lead at 1.1 second over Norris, Leclerc holding third, Antonelli fourth, Piastri fifth, Verstappen sixth, Hamilton seventh as Gasly completed the top eight.

Red Bull’s Liam Lawson held 1tth off the start, Racing Bulls’ Yuki Tsunoda had lost one place to Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and was down in 13th.

Lap three – Russell still had a small gap, meaning Norris behind did not have Overtake Mode on hand with which to attack or defend.

Leclerc was having a look but could find a way past. Antonelli in fourth was setting purple sectors, that Mercedes showing serious race pace.

The fourth tour – Perez had finally come out – the Mexican was two laps down, so this was a test session for the Cadillac driver now.

Norris had started to eat into Russell’s lead and was just outside the one second mark.

Lap five – Russell lead by under a second – Norris had Overtake Mode in his grasp.

Leclerc and Antonelli both had Overtake Mode too, but Piastri was starting to drop back from the top four.

The sixth lap – Home favourite Verstappen was dropping off the back of Piastri’s MCL40 entry – he was over two seconds adrift. He had Hamilton, his old rival for company. Hamilton was just half-a-second back but like the others, was struggling to find a place to overtake.

Nico Hulkenberg was in the pits to retire his Audi R26 entry due to a technical issue.

Lap seven – Russell was just sneaking into the one second gap over Norris, to deny his McLaren rival Overtake Mode. Leclerc had also fallen back – Antonelli was the man to watch, he was six tenths behind the Ferrari driver and if Leclerc does struggle on his softer rubber towards the end, the Italian could pounce on the Monegasque driver.

The eighth tour – Gasly was the midfield man most likely to pick up a point today, the Frenchman was holding onto eighth place for Alpine, with Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto one second back in ninth.

Lap 10 – Race leader Russell had a 1.5 second lead over Norris with Leclerc third, Antonelli fourth, Piastri fifth, Verstappen sixth, Hamilton seventh whilst Gasly rounded out the points-paying positions in eighth.

“I have no rear,” reported Norris aboard his McLaren.

The halfway point of proceedings – Bortoleto had been keeping Gasly honest, but he too was dropping back after being within a second of the Alpine driver since the start of the Sprint.

Gasly was managing his tyres, with plenty of fresh air ahead as he targets the final point.

The 13th tour – Leclerc was getting closer to Norris in the battle for second place. His rear wing opened, he tucked up behind the McLaren but he just could not find a way through.

Leclerc’s soft tyres were lasting and they were just past the midway point of the Sprint.

Lap 14 – Russell was on course towards the win, with Norris very much in defensive mode behind with Leclerc right on his tail.

The 15th tour – Fifth-placed Piastri looked very promising yesterday, especially on the medium compounds. But he did not seem to have the pace in race trim, he was 4.5 seconds off championship leader Antonelli, the largest gap between the top teams.

The 16th lap – After a few tours trying to cool his tyres, Hamilton had closed back up behind Verstappen and was within a second of the Dutchman in the battle for sixth place.

Lap 17 – Four tenths of a second between Leclerc and Norris. They both took the high line through turn 3, but Norris was foot-perfect and left no gap for Leclerc to even be tempted.

The Ferrari drivers’ tyres were holding on well.

The 18th tour – Leclerc got past Norris – down into Tarzan. He flew down the main-straight, Overtake Mode enabled and he dived past the reigning world champion before the corner.

And now Antonelli was closing in on the papaya entry.

Lap 19 – Leclerc got within four-tenths of Norris before he made his move. Antonelli was 0.522 seconds back. He needed to get closer to the McLaren.

Leclerc was already 1.4 seconds up the road in second place, with Russell leading, 1.3 seconds ahead of the Monegasque driver.

The 20th tour – Can Antonelli cool his tyres, top up his battery and then close back up to Norris was the question? The gap was at nine tenths.

Albon had just been told light rain was possible on the last lap.

Lap 21 – Verstappen’s Race Engineer Giampiero Lambiase had said the rain would not hit before the end of the Sprint. The Dutchman could see the dark clouds building.

Antonelli in fourth was seven tenths back, so still not close enough to make a move on Norris in the battle for third place.

Russell and Leclerc had checked out in the top two places.

Lap 22 – Antonelli was half-a-second back on Norris. But he needed another tenth or two to even attempt a move on the McLaren. Norris did not have Overtake Mode as he was over two seconds back on Leclerc.

The wind was picking up as the clouds started to roll in.

The penultimate lap – Russell had not put a foot wrong as he was set for a third Sprint victory of the year. He was 1.5 seconds in-front of Leclerc, and cruising towards eight points.

As for the fight for third, Antonelli was seven tenths back on Norris.

Hulkenberg had come back out and 13 laps down.

Russell crossed the line to take the Dutch GP Sprint victory by 1.3 seconds over Leclerc with Norris fending off Antonelli to take third place.

Piastri came home fifth and ahead of home favourite Verstappen who was sixth and Hamilton who ended the race seventh.

Gasly completed the top eight for Alpine.

2026 Dutch GP Sprint Winner – George Russell, #63, Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team, F1 W17 – (8 Points):

“Good start to the weekend. If it was one more lap, it would have been a very different end to the race. I knew if there were going to be any overtakes, they would be towards the end, so I knew I needed to manage [the tyres] to make sure I had some at the end. I knew Charles would be fast, but I was able to stay away.”

2nd Place – Charles Leclerc, #16, Scuderia Ferrari HP, SF-26 – +1.360s – (7 Points):

“Always when you are the only one doing something, it is either very right or very wrong. But it was good, it means we did our homework in FP1. I knew Lando didn’t have much deployment on the main straight, so I needed to maximise that. But we still arrived at the braking point at the same moment, so it was tough. The car is feeling good, so it is good to start the second half of the season like this.”

3rd Place – Lando Norris, #1, McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team-Mercedes, MCL40 – +5.196s – (6 Points):

“Not a bad result, not the best – would have been nicer to be a little bit faster today. But Charles was too quick. I don’t think it was the tyres; they were just a little bit quicker today. We are very good in high speed; the car is just not performing to the level it needs to in the slow speed. We can be happy with the progress we are making, but we need more.”
