Scuderia Ferrari have unveiled their 2021 contender, the SF21, the car they hope will bring them back to the front of the field this season.

The car, which will see this campaign in the hands of all-new Ferrari driver pairing Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, have the big objective of bringing the Prancing Horse back to winning ways, after the Scuderia suffered their worst season since 1980 last year, finishing sixth in the World Constructor’s Championship standings.

At the team launch on February 26, where new acquisition Sainz was officially presented alongside team-mate Leclerc – Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto stated that the SF21, which will feature Ferrari’s new 065/6 power-train, had recovered a lot more speed on the straights compared to it’s SF1000 counterpart.

Director of Ferrari’s Power-Unit Department Enrico Gualtieri explained in the SF21 launch video that they have completely re-designed the engine and were aware of their weaknesses and the areas they needed to improve:

“In our sport, you have to be continuously aware of the areas where you can improve, the points you can improve. You have to continuously think about your lessons, and experience, and learn from your defeats. And then you work hard, with humility. This awareness, along with our passion and skills, and the skills of our technical partners, is what created the power unit 065/6 for the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship. Along with the chassis engineers, we have worked considerably on the layout of the power unit, trying to make the overall project for the car as efficient as possible. We continuously worked on the internal combustion motor, aiming to increase its thermal efficiency, with help also coming from our partner Shell which has led to an advantage estimated at over one tenth of a second per lap.”

“The turbocharger has been revised, to meet the needs of the motor and, at the same time, we have planned to increase the efficiency in the recovery of the exhaust fumes. We’re also working on the hybrid system, on the electronic part, trying to revise all its components and optimise them,”

“The 065/6, therefore, was born out of all of this. It has been teamwork, we have all worked together. We have put enormous energy into this project, but we’re already working hard on the power unit for 2022. It will debut next year, and it will be even more important because it’ll be with us for at least three years of races.” Gualtieri concluded.

This will give hope to the Scuderia for their 2021 season, which could see them fighting for their first pole position since the 2019 Mexican Grand Prix – and their first victory since the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix.

The SF21 features the traditional Ferrari red along with a blended burgundy at the rear, reminiscent of it’s famous 125 S and the notable colour, which they used for their 1000th Grand Prix at Mugello last season.

The car also features a not-so traditional green Mission Winnow logo on the engine cover, behind the cockpit.

Following the car’s launch, the SF21 will get it’s first taste of the Bahrain International Circuit in a shakedown Thursday before hitting the track in Formula One’s pre-season test from Friday March 12- Sunday March 14.

The SF21 however, is the penultimate car to be officially unveiled in 2021, with only Ferrari’s customer team Uralkali Haas F1 Team still to release their machine for this campaign, the VF-21, which is due to be shown to the world Friday morning before the lights go green for the first day of testing.
