The stage is set for the 2026 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, with Lando Norris leading the field away from pole position for Sunday’s 70-lap race at the Hungaroring.

While qualifying delivered another fiercely contested battle at the front, the final starting order changed after the FIA handed three-place grid penalties to Ferrari’s Sir Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli following separate qualifying infringements.

The penalties have reshuffled the top ten and could have significant implications in both the race for victory and the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.

Hamilton handed three-place grid penalty for impeding Piastri

Ferrari’s Sir Lewis Hamilton was demoted three places on the starting grid after the FIA stewards ruled that he unnecessarily impeded Oscar Piastri during the closing stages of qualifying.

Before the stewards reached their decision, Hamilton admitted he was uncertain whether he had blocked another driver.

“I think my mind is just elsewhere right this second, because once I’d finished my lap, I don’t know if I got in the way of someone, so I’m just trying to run that through my mind, because I wasn’t aware anyone was coming.” Hamilton concluded.

Following an investigation involving both drivers, team representatives, telemetry, onboard footage and radio communications, the FIA concluded Hamilton had impeded Piastri’s McLaren.

The stewards said:

 

“At the approach to Turn 1, Car 44 was travelling at a significantly reduced speed on the racing line while Car 81 was approaching on a push lap.

 

“The driver of Car 44 explained that he had just completed a fast lap and did not receive the team’s radio message regarding the approaching Car 81 until the latter was already in close proximity. He further stated that, due to the positioning of his car on the track, Car 81 was not visible in his mirrors.

 

“Car 81, which was on a push lap, was forced to take avoiding action by running wide and being obliged to abort the lap.

 

“Having examined the available evidence, the Stewards determined that Car 44 unnecessarily impeded Car 81 during Qualifying.

 

“In accordance with the FIA Formula One Regulations and the established penalty guidelines for this type of infringement in Qualifying, the Stewards impose a three-place grid penalty on the driver of Car 44.”

The penalty drops Hamilton three positions on the grid, making Ferrari’s task considerably more difficult as it looks to challenge McLaren and Mercedes around the tight and technical Hungaroring circuit.

Championship leader Antonelli also penalised

World Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli also received a three-place grid penalty after failing to sufficiently reduce his speed under yellow flags during qualifying.

The Mercedes rookie admitted he lifted off the throttle after seeing the yellow flag, but the FIA concluded the reduction in speed was not significant enough to satisfy the regulations.

The stewards explained:

 

“The driver of Car 12 (Antonelli) stated that on seeing the yellow flag and light panel, he lifted off the throttle earlier than his previous push lap. This was verified by the telemetry.

 

“However, the reduction in speed occurred for a very short period, and in fact the car’s speed when passing the scene of the incident involving Car 3 (Verstappen) was slightly higher than that on the previous push lap.

 

“The mini sector time was only 0.03 seconds slower than his best time for that mini sector, and whilst, because he had lifted 16 metres earlier, he was 14 km/h slower entering the yellow flag sector, he was 3 km/h faster when passing the incident site due to less application of the brakes entering the corner.

 

“The FIA representatives noted that the speed reduction in the mini sector was less than one per cent.

 

“The Stewards considered this incident to be different to other incidents that have resulted in no further action because, unlike those cases, there was no significant speed delta through the mini sector compared to the driver’s previous fastest time under similar circumstances.

 

“The recommended penalty according to the penalty guidelines for this offence is a drop of five grid positions. However, in mitigation of penalty, we considered that the driver did make a reduction in speed, albeit, in our determination, an insufficient and unsustained one.

 

“Further, the driver had limited time and distance to react. Hence a lower penalty is applied.”

Antonelli was also issued a warning in a separate qualifying incident for driving unnecessarily slowly on an in-lap.

Despite the penalty, the Mercedes driver remains in a strong championship position heading into one of the most strategically demanding races on the Formula 1 calendar.

Norris in prime position

Starting from pole at a circuit where overtaking opportunities are notoriously limited gives Lando Norris a significant advantage heading into Sunday’s Grand Prix.

The Hungaroring has long been regarded as one of Formula 1’s most difficult venues for passing, placing extra emphasis on race starts, tyre management and pit-stop strategy.

With Hamilton and Antonelli both dropping down the order, Norris will be looking to convert pole position into another crucial victory, while the likes of Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and George Russell will all be aiming to capitalise if opportunities arise.

The opening laps are expected to be critical, particularly through the tight first corner where several championship contenders begin the race in close proximity following the post-qualifying grid reshuffle.

What to watch in Sunday’s race

The Hungarian Grand Prix is expected to develop into a fascinating strategic battle over 70 laps.

Tyre degradation, track position and the timing of safety cars have frequently determined the outcome at the Hungaroring, while the revised grid adds another layer of intrigue.

Hamilton faces the challenge of recovering lost ground after his penalty, Antonelli must minimise the championship damage, and Norris has the opportunity to strengthen his title credentials by converting pole into victory.

With championship rivals packed together near the front and overtaking at a premium, Sunday’s race promises to be one of the most compelling contests of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
