2026 Austrian GP Preview – After Sir Lewis Hamilton scored his first Grand Prix victory for Ferrari at the Catalan GP as championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli suffered a shock retirement, round eight of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship returns to the Red Bull Ring this weekend in Spielberg, Austria for the Formula 1 Lenovo Austrian Grand Prix 2026. This will be the 39th running of the Austrian Grand Prix as a round of the Formula One World Championship since the sport began in 1950. This is a double header weekend with the British Grand Prix.

2026 Austrian GP Preview – A look at the Red Bull Ring

The Red Bull Ring (Formerly A1-Ring) is a permanent racing facility in Spielberg, Styria, Austria.
The race circuit was founded as Österreichring and hosted the Formula One Austrian Grand Prix for 18 consecutive years, from 1970 to 1987. It was later shortened, rebuilt and renamed the A1-Ring, it hosted the Austrian Grand Prix again from 1997 to 2003. When Formula One outgrew the circuit, a plan was drawn up to extend the layout. Parts of the circuit, including the pits and main grandstand, were demolished, but construction work was stopped, and the circuit remained unusable for a few years before it was purchased by Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz and rebuilt. It was renamed the Red Bull Ring, and the track was reopened on 15 May 2011 and hosted a round of the 2011 DTM Season and a round of the 2011 F2 Championship.
The old Österreichring was often referred to as being located at Zeltweg, which is bigger and better known. However, the circuit was only modified and never relocated.
In addition, the one-off 1964 Austrian Grand Prix was held at Zeltweg Airfield, so the name was already known.
The Red Bull Ring is a medium downforce circuit featuring fast straights and slow and medium-speed corners with historically just the first three taken in low gear. As such, lap times were low with sub-1:10s lap. Average speeds were high, with the 2003 race seeing Michael Schumacher win with an average speed of 213km/h.
The circuit runs in a clockwise direction and is 4.326km (2.688 miles) in length with ten corners.
The race distance is 307.018km with 71 laps in total.
Oscar Piastri holds the fastest lap record of the circuit set at last year’s event with a 1:07.924 in his McLaren Formula 1 Team-Mercedes MCL40.
Three-time World Champion Max Verstappen holds the record for most wins in Austria with four to his name.
Ferrari and McLaren are the most successful constructor in Austria with seven victories to their respective names.

2026 Austrian GP Preview – Straight & Overtake Mode Zones
For the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, Formula 1 replaces DRS with four active aerodynamic Straight Mode zones and a new Overtake Mode system. Straight Mode can be used on the Start-Finish Straight, between Turns 1 and 3, between Turns 3 and 4, and between Turns 8 and 9, reducing drag and increasing straight-line speed. Overtake Mode provides additional electrical power to aid passing opportunities. To qualify, a driver must be within one second of the car ahead at the Overtake Detection Point located at the entry to Turn 10. Activation begins at the start-finish straight.
2026 Austrian GP Preview – Pitlane Speed Limits
Pitlane speeds will be 80km/h during practice, qualifying and the race.
ICYMI – Hamilton scores maiden Ferrari victory at Barcelona GP as Antonelli retires

Sir Lewis Hamilton claimed his maiden Ferrari victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, securing the 106th win of his Formula 1 career and a record-equalling seventh triumph at the venue. The seven-time World Champion converted a strong strategic performance from Ferrari into victory, defeating Mercedes’ George Russell and McLaren’s Lando Norris.
Russell led the opening stages from pole position and appeared in control of the race, while championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli remained firmly in contention as Mercedes looked set to challenge for victory. However, Ferrari gained the upper hand through the pit-stop cycle and a well-timed Virtual Safety Car, allowing Hamilton to emerge ahead of both Mercedes drivers and seize control of the Grand Prix.
Once in front, Hamilton demonstrated excellent pace and tyre management to build a comfortable advantage over the field. Behind him, Antonelli mounted a late charge and overtook team-mate Russell for second place on lap 61, only for his race to end in heartbreak two laps later when an engine failure forced his retirement.
Hamilton comfortably took the chequered flag to secure Ferrari’s first Grand Prix victory since the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. Russell inherited second place ahead of Norris, while Max Verstappen finished fourth for Red Bull and Oscar Piastri completed the top five.
Antonelli’s retirement proved a significant moment in the championship battle, costing the Italian valuable points and reducing his advantage over Hamilton to 41 points heading into the Austrian Grand Prix. The result firmly re-established Hamilton as a genuine title contender as the 2026 season approached its halfway point.

2026 Austrian GP Preview – The Situation

The 2026 Formula One campaign heads to the Red Bull Ring this weekend for the Austrian Grand Prix.
After Sir Lewis Hamilton’s first-ever victory for Ferrari last time out in Barcelona, all eyes will be on the seven-time world champion if he can continue to surge into contention for a record eighth world title.
Hamilton trails behind Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 41 points after the Italian suffered a technical failure leading the 19-year-old to deal with a first moment of a major hit in 2026 after a solid start to his campaign.
George Russell also benefitted from team-mate Antonelli’s retirement as the Briton finished second to get back within 50 points of the Italian.
Whilst Mercedes and Ferrari are likely to start the weekend as favourites, defending Constructor’s Champions McLaren showed signs of improvement in Barcelona and will be aiming for a first victory of the season with reigning World Drivers’ Champion Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri.
Another plot twist will be provided by Oracle Red Bull Racing as they return to Austria for their home Grand Prix with four-time world champion Max Verstappen’s future still up in the air.
The first practice session at the Austrian Grand Prix will feature four rookie drivers as teams continue to fulfil Formula One’s mandatory young driver running requirements. Luke Browning will drive for Williams in place of Carlos Sainz Jr., Jak Crawford replaces Lance Stroll at Aston Martin, Paul Aron takes over Gabriel Bortoleto’s Audi, while Cadillac will field Colton Herta in place of Valtteri Bottas. All four drivers will gain valuable Formula One experience as teams collect data ahead of the remainder of the race weekend. More drivers may potentially be announced.
Antonelli heads to Spielberg sitting on top of the World Driver’s Championship standings with 156 points, and a 41-point lead over Ferrari’s Hamilton who is second on 115 points whilst team-mate Russell is a further 50 points off the Australian in third on 106 points.
Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team returns to its home circuit on top of the World Constructor’s Championship with 262 points, and a 72-point advantage over nearest rivals Scuderia Ferrari HP who are second on 190 points, whilst McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team are a further 121 points behind the Brackley based-outfit in third place on 141 points.
