Leclerc Italian GP FP1 – Charles Leclerc lead from team-mate Sir Lewis Hamilton in a Ferrari one-two in FP1 at the team’s home Italian GP as Mercedes’ George Russell completed the top three. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli was fifth.

Leclerc posted the session-topping benchmark of a 1:23.008 on the C4 yellow side-walled medium compounds and was 0.173 seconds clear of team-mate Hamilton whilst Russell was a further 0.304 seconds adrift of the Monegasque driver in third.

In the session reserve drivers took the place of regular drivers and they included:

• Luke Browning for Williams in place of Alexander Albon.
• Paul Aron for Alpine in place of Pierre Gasly.
• Ayumu Iwasa for Red Bull in place of Max Verstappen.
• Colton Herta for Cadillac in place of Sergio Perez.

Iwasa in the RB22 lead the pack out with the C3 white side-walled harder compounds.

The Japanese driver posted the benchmark of 1:34.202, which was beaten by Haas’s Esteban Ocon’s 1:30.541 as his team-mate Oliver Bearman slotted into second with a 1:32.740.

Leclerc went quickest on a 1:26.873, as Russell pipped the Ferrari driver with a 1:25.259.

Hamilton then moved ahead of team-mate Leclerc posting a 1:26.748 as Colapinto jumped both Ferrari’s with a 1:26.628.

Liam Lawson put his Red Bull second with the softer compounds setting a 1:25.785 to be 0.526 off Russell’s benchmark.

Antonelli then pushed his Mercedes to second with a 1:25.637, but only briefly as Oscar Piastri went only 0.074 seconds off Russell to jump to second in the order.

Leclerc was next and with two purple sectors went quickest on a 1:24.482 on his fifth tour on the harder rubber.

Racing Bulls’ Yuki Tsunoda then jumped into second place setting a 1:25.142, whilst Lawson snatched P1 setting a 1:24.383 on the softs.

Lindblad then pushed into third with a 1:24.746 but was then beaten by reigning world champion Lando Norris’s 1:24.526.

Antonelli then moved into third place posting a 1:24.515 whilst Piastri moved into second place to be 0.011 off Lawson’s best time – a 1:24.394 for the Australian.

Hamilton with three personal bests shot to the head of the pile posting a 1:24.291 on the harder compounds to go 0.092 seconds in-front of Lawson.

Norris was next and with three personal bests took P1 off his fellow British-compatriot to go 0.097 seconds clear at the 14^th-minute mark of proceedings.

Russell with the best middle sector took top spot on a 1:23.802 as Piastri with two personal bests improved to third and was 0.451 seconds off the Briton.

Lawson on the softer rubber with the best final sector took third on a 1:24.196 to be 0.394 seconds adrift of Russell.

Hamilton followed and with the best sector three time ended up 0.089 seconds off Russell to moved back up into second whilst his team-mate Leclerc slotted into third with a 1:24.023.

Norris returned to the top of the time-sheets with a 1:23.719 to be 0.083 seconds clear of Russell.

The yellow flags were brought out at the 18^th-minute-mark of Cadillac reserve Colton Herta who peeled off track due to a mechanical issue.

The VSC was brought out for the VF-26 racer then the red flag was waved at the 20^th-minute-mark.

After a four-minute delay and Herta’s VF-26 entry was clear and the running went green, Antonelli lead the pack out on the C5 red side-walled softer compounds.

The home favourite Antonelli went quickest on a 1:23.644, which was beaten by team-mate Russell’s 1:23.312 to be 0.332 seconds faster.

Lawson jumped to third overall on a 1:23.712 on the softs whilst Leclerc with two purples took P1 on a 1:23.008 on the C4 mediums.

Hungarian GP winner last time-out, Norris despite a personal best middle sector remained in fifth place and 0.711 seconds off Leclerc’s best effort.

Russell followed and with a personal best opening sector, ended up 0.711 seconds off his next timed lap and remained second whilst Hamilton with two personal bests moved up into third and was 0.553 seconds off team-mate Leclerc at the top.

Replays showed all three of championship leader Antonelli, reigning world champion Norris and Williams’ Carlos Sainz all having a moment running through the Variante Del’ Rettifilo Chicane (turn one) run-off area.

Piastri with two personal bests on the softer tyres remained in ninth and 1.176 seconds off Leclerc’s best time.

Lawson also with a personal best sector one, could not improve in his RB22 entry and stayed in fifth overall.

Following a brief five-minute lull, the top runners emerged all on a mix of the medium and softer tyres.

Lawson with two personal bests and a purple final sector moved up into third in the classification on 1:23.433 whilst Hamilton with the best final sector jumped to second place behind his team-mate Leclerc setting a 1:23.181 to end up 0.173 off.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso had dipped a wheel in the gravel and held his car steady despite the rear end of his AMR26 entry threatening to step out. Zero lift off there as well.

Bearman also had a moment in the gravel, sliding wide after cutting the corner and going across some loose stuff. The Briton would want the team to check his floor.

The session ended with Leclerc on top and in-front of team-mate Hamilton whilst Russell completed the top three.

Lawson split the Silver Arrows in fourth as Antonelli placed fifth and McLaren’s Norris took sixth in the order.

Lindblad ended Free Practice 1 seventh and ahead of Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto who took eighth.

Alpine’s Colapinto and Paul Aron rounded out the top ten.
