Max Verstappen commits to Red Bull until 2030
The biggest Formula 1 contract story of August has finally been resolved.
Max Verstappen has signed a new agreement that will keep him with Red Bull Racing through the end of the 2030 season.
The decision brings an end to months of speculation about the four-time world champion’s future, particularly amid Mercedes’ emergence under the new 2026 regulations and Red Bull’s difficult transition into a new power-unit era.
For Red Bull, retaining Verstappen is arguably the most important piece of its long-term project.
For Verstappen, it represents a significant vote of confidence in the team that has delivered all four of his world championships.
“I’m very happy with the extension of the contract,” Verstappen said. “We have the best people and I’m very excited to continue working together to get back to the top.”
That final phrase is particularly revealing.
Red Bull is not currently enjoying the level of dominance it established during Verstappen’s championship-winning run. The 2026 regulations have changed the competitive landscape, while Red Bull-Ford Powertrains is developing its own new-generation power unit.
Verstappen’s decision suggests that he believes Red Bull can ultimately return to championship-winning form.
For Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies, retaining Verstappen provides the team with the stability required to develop around a proven world champion.
It also removes one of the biggest potential variables from the future driver market.
With Verstappen now committed through 2030, rival teams will have to look elsewhere if they want to find their next superstar.
Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon stay at Williams
Williams has also delivered a major statement of intent by retaining both of its drivers.
Carlos Sainz has signed a new multi-year agreement, while Alexander Albon has extended his contract, keeping the pair together as Williams continues its long-term rebuild.
The timing is significant.
Williams enjoyed an encouraging 2025 season, finishing fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, but the team’s 2026 campaign has been much more difficult.
The Grove outfit currently sits ninth with only 11 points, leaving it a long way from the position many expected it to occupy when the new regulations arrived.
Team principal James Vowles admitted that he had been concerned about the possibility of losing both drivers.
“It was a concern,” Vowles said when discussing the prospect of Sainz and Albon leaving the team.
Instead, both have chosen to stay.
Sainz has made it clear that his decision is based on his belief in the Williams project rather than simply the team’s current championship position.
“I re-signed because I believe in the project,” the Spaniard said.
That commitment is important for a team attempting to rebuild itself into a regular front-running contender.
Sainz arrived at Williams after leaving Ferrari and has already delivered two Grand Prix podiums and a Sprint podium for the team. His experience and technical understanding make him an important part of the organisation’s development process.
Albon has been equally important.
Since joining Williams, the Thai driver has become one of the team’s most experienced and consistent performers. Keeping both drivers provides Williams with continuity at a time when the technical side of the organisation is undergoing significant change.
Rather than starting again with a new driver line-up, Vowles now has two experienced drivers who understand the team’s strengths, weaknesses and long-term objectives.
For Williams, that could prove just as valuable as any individual result in 2026.
Franco Colapinto signs on with Alpine for 2027
Franco Colapinto has also secured his immediate Formula 1 future.
Alpine has confirmed that the Argentine will remain with the team for the 2027 season alongside Pierre Gasly.
It is an important step for Colapinto, who has had to fight for his place in Formula 1 since making his breakthrough.
His performances during 2026 have strengthened his position within the Alpine organisation. He has scored points in six of the first 12 races and contributed 19 points to Alpine’s overall total.
The team currently sits sixth in the Constructors’ Championship.
Alpine’s decision to retain Colapinto therefore represents a commitment to continued development.
Flavio Briatore has previously praised the Argentine’s progress, highlighting performances in races such as Miami and Montreal as evidence that Colapinto is developing into a more complete Formula 1 driver.
Colapinto was understandably delighted to have his future settled.
“I am very pleased to remain with this team in 2027,” he said.
The agreement also provides Alpine with something increasingly valuable in modern Formula 1 — stability.
Gasly remains under contract through 2028, meaning Alpine now has a settled driver pairing for the next phase of its project.
For Colapinto, the challenge is clear.
The opportunity is now his to turn potential into consistent Formula 1 results.
FIA ADUO engine news could reshape the 2026 F1 battle
While the driver market has been settling down, the engine battle is becoming increasingly interesting.
The FIA has completed another assessment under its Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities system, commonly known as ADUO.
The system forms part of the new 2026 power-unit regulations and is designed to prevent large performance gaps between engine manufacturers from becoming permanently entrenched.
The latest FIA assessment found Red Bull-Ford Powertrains to be the benchmark for internal-combustion-engine performance.
Mercedes was assessed as being between 2% and 4% behind Red Bull, while Ferrari, Honda and Audi were more than 4% behind.
As a result, Mercedes receives an additional ICE homologation opportunity in 2026 and 2027.
Ferrari, Honda and Audi receive two additional opportunities.
Red Bull receives none because its power unit remains the benchmark.
The importance of the system extends beyond 2026.
The new Formula 1 regulations place a much greater emphasis on electrical power, but the internal-combustion engine remains an important part of the overall package.
The additional development opportunities could therefore help manufacturers such as Ferrari and Audi close the gap over the remainder of the regulation cycle.
For Red Bull, meanwhile, the findings provide further evidence that its new power-unit operation has made an encouraging technical start.
It also adds another intriguing dimension to Verstappen’s decision to remain with the team until 2030.
Ferrari pays tribute to Michael Schumacher at Monza
Few Formula 1 races carry the historical significance of Monza.
For Ferrari, the Italian Grand Prix is more than another round of the championship. It is the team’s home race, an annual celebration of the Scuderia and its supporters.
This year’s event is expected to carry an additional emotional dimension.
Ferrari is preparing a special livery inspired by Michael Schumacher’s first Ferrari, the F310.
Schumacher joined Ferrari for the 1996 season after leaving Benetton, beginning a partnership that would eventually change the history of Formula 1.
The F310 itself was not an easy car.
But it represented the beginning of something extraordinary.
Schumacher would go on to win five consecutive Drivers’ Championships with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004, while helping the Scuderia establish an era of dominance.
The F310 therefore occupies a special place in Ferrari history.
A modern Ferrari carrying elements inspired by that car around Monza will provide a striking link between the team’s past and present.
It is also particularly appropriate in 2026, three decades after Schumacher’s first season with Ferrari.
For Ferrari fans, the tribute is likely to be one of the weekend’s defining visual moments.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli faces Monza engine penalty
While Ferrari celebrates its history, Italy’s latest Formula 1 star will have a very different challenge.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli arrives at Monza as the 2026 championship leader.
But the Mercedes driver will have to fight his way through the field after taking an engine-related grid penalty.
Mercedes has elected to change Antonelli’s power unit following earlier reliability problems, meaning the young Italian faces a significant setback at his home Grand Prix.
It is a cruel piece of timing for a driver enjoying the biggest season of his young career.
Antonelli, however, has taken a pragmatic view of the decision.
“Obviously going into Monza we have an engine penalty, but I still think it’s the best track to take it,” he said.
There is logic behind that assessment.
Monza’s long straights, heavy braking zones and high-speed layout generally offer more overtaking opportunities than many other circuits.
A penalty is never welcome, but Mercedes will hope Antonelli’s pace allows him to recover positions.
The stakes are enormous.
Antonelli leads the championship, and every point could prove crucial as the season enters its decisive stages.
A strong recovery drive at his home race would therefore represent more than a good result.
It could become one of the defining performances of his 2026 campaign.
Could Imola host the F1 season finale?
There is also an intriguing question hanging over the final part of the Formula 1 calendar.
Could Imola host the 2026 season finale?
The possibility has emerged amid uncertainty surrounding the scheduled Middle Eastern races, with the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari reportedly among the potential contingency venues.
At this stage, it remains speculation rather than a confirmed calendar change.
But the idea of ending the Formula 1 season at Imola would be remarkable.
The circuit has a rich history in the sport and remains one of the most popular European venues among Formula 1 fans.
It would also provide a very different setting for a championship finale compared with Abu Dhabi.
Imola’s narrow, old-school layout would create a completely different strategic challenge, while an Italian season finale would give the country an extraordinary role in the closing stages of the 2026 championship.
Other venues have also been discussed as potential alternatives, meaning there is no guarantee that Imola will ultimately be required.
For now, the important point is that the possibility exists.
August leaves Formula 1 with more questions than answers
The latest 2026 F1 news has produced an interesting mixture of certainty and uncertainty.
Verstappen’s future is now settled.
So are those of Sainz, Albon and Colapinto.
But the competitive order remains anything but predictable.
Red Bull-Ford has emerged as the benchmark for ICE performance, while Mercedes continues to benefit from a highly competitive overall package. Ferrari has additional development opportunities under the FIA’s ADUO system, and Audi is among the manufacturers with room to make further gains.
Then there is Monza.
Ferrari will celebrate one of the most important chapters in its history by paying tribute to Schumacher and the F310.
Antonelli, meanwhile, will attempt to protect his championship lead from the back of the grid at his home Grand Prix.
And if the calendar uncertainty continues, Imola could yet become the setting for the final chapter of an already extraordinary season.
Formula 1 has entered a new technical era, but the sport’s oldest themes remain unchanged: speed, politics, engineering, loyalty and the relentless pursuit of championships.
As the paddock heads to Monza, one thing is certain.
The biggest stories of the 2026 season are still being written.
