With its new chapter well and truly underway following Andrea Stella’s promotion from Executive Director to Team Principal of the Woking-based outfit, the team starts their 60th anniversary celebrations by welcoming rookie and 2021 FIA Formula 2 World Champion Oscar Piastri to drive the MCL60 alongside the talented Lando Norris.

Norris, enters his fifth season in the sport with McLaren after scoring a sixth podium at last season’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix whilst Piastri, from Melbourne Australia, joins the squad having won consecutive FIA Formula 3 and FIA Formula 2 World Championships in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

To mark McLaren’s milestone year, the team’s 2023 challenger will be named the MCL60, in a break from its previous name convention.

New Zealand-born racing legend Bruce McLaren founded McLaren Racing in 1963 and since then the team has won 20 Formula One World Championships, started 183 Grands Prix, triumphed the Indianapolis 500 three times and once at the Le Mans 24 Hours in it’s initial attempt.

The MCL60 features a striking papaya orange and blue livery, the traditional colours used by the team in the 1960’s, which have since become a team favourite when it was re-introduced back in 2018.

The MCL60, designed under the leadership of Technical Director James Key and produced by the team in Woking, lead by Operations Director Piers Thynne, will be powered by Mercedes-AMG’s F1 M14 E Performance power-train that is integrated into the McLaren chassis and gearbox with support from Mercedes’ HPP in Brixworth, United Kingdom.

Norris and Piastri will give the MCL60 it’s official on-track debut at Formula One’s official pre-season test at the Bahrain International Circuit from Thursday February 23-Saturday February 23 with the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix a week later.

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown explained:

“We are delighted to launch our 2023 Formula 1 team with Lando and Oscar at the wheel as we celebrate 60 years of McLaren Racing. This year’s driver line-up is extremely exciting as Lando, an intelligent and confident driver with excellent pace, is joined by one of the biggest up-and-coming talents in motorsport with Oscar,”

“2022 was a challenging season in our continued effort to push towards the front of the grid. We learnt a lot which has been taken into the off-season as the entire team works hard to prepare for another year. Under the guidance of Andrea Stella, who moved into the position of Team Principal in December 2022, we have an excellent team to spearhead the 2023 season and can look forward to seeing our young driver duo continue to grow their partnership throughout the upcoming campaign,”

“Being one of the oldest teams on the Formula 1 grid and marking our 60-year anniversary as a racing team is an excellent achievement. We have a wealth of history dating back to when Bruce McLaren first formed McLaren Racing in 1963, therefore, it is appropriate we honour the last six decades through our 2023 competitor’s name, the MCL60. This is the start of several anniversary commemorations that will be exhibited throughout the year,”

“We are thrilled to celebrate this significant journey with our fantastic group of committed and valuable partners. Their support is an integral part in the journey to achieving our ambitions. The same can be said for our fantastic fans. We always aim to achieve the best result possible at every grand prix weekend and thank those supporters who continue to fly the papaya flag,”

“We’re now looking forward to heading back to being on track in Bahrain. It’ll be great to see the MCL60 in action ahead of the 2023 season. Let’s go racing!” Brown concluded. Credit to McLaren for the quote.

Norris looking ahead to the 2023 campaign added:

“The off-season has been good but I’m looking forward to getting back on track and behind the wheel of the MCL60 for the first time. The new car looks great, and everyone involved in the build has played an important role,”

“This is my fifth year in Formula 1 and I’m hoping to carry positive momentum into the new season after a year of racing under the new era of regulations. It’s been a good challenge adapting to them and I feel that I’m in a positive position to keep on improving as a driver. I’ve enjoyed my journey with the team so far and to be involved in McLaren’s 60th anniversary is a privilege. I’ll continue to work hard alongside Oscar throughout this significant year as we look to maximise opportunities to score points.” Norris concluded. Credit to McLaren for the quote.

Rookie Piastri commented:

“I’m delighted to get started with McLaren and make my F1 debut this season. The off-season has been great for me, and I’ve been working hard to prepare for the upcoming year. The time I’ve spent at the factory and in the sim has been enjoyable and productive, and everyone in the team has been welcoming. I’ve settled in well and I’m now fully focused on getting out on track in Bahrain,”

“The MCL60 is very impressive and it’s going to be a memorable year, not just for me in my rookie season but also as a team celebrating 60 years of McLaren Racing. The challenge ahead is an exciting one and I’m looking forward to driving with Lando as we work hard to pick up points throughout the season.” Piastri concluded. Credit to McLaren for the quote.

In-front of a packed audience at the team’s new Silverstone Headquarters, Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1 Team unleashed it’s 2023 contender, the AMR23 – their third Formula One car since returning to the sport in 2021.

Their drivers Lance Stroll and new acquisition, double-world champion Fernando Alonso, who joins from Alpine, took to the stage to reveal the AMR23, alongside Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll and Team Principal Mike Krack.

The AMR23 is an evolution of last season’s predecessor, which was knife-edged across the season into a consistent points challenger, which saw them finish seventh in the World Constructors Championship and level on points with Alfa Romeo.

In the team’s third year of its ambitious journey as Aston Martin, the aim is to deliver a car that will be competitive from the get-go.

The Silverstone-based squad noted that the AMR23 features a “heavily revised” front wing, new sidepods and engine cover with a bigger inlet on the roll-hoop.

Team Principal Mike Krack reflected on last campaign and looking ahead to the upcoming season stating:

“The second half of 2022 showed real signs of progress as we worked hard on car development. For this year, our aim must be to build a car that can fully deliver on its performance potential from the first moment it hits the track,”

“Making a strong start to the year, and then maintaining that momentum, is necessary if we are to make further advances towards the front of the grid. And, as an organisation, we are working hard to achieve that, and to further strengthen all areas of the team,”

“We already know the proven strengths of our design, engineering and build departments – the arrival of Fernando, partnering Lance, further underlines the sheer depth and range of our driver squad. It feels like every element of this organisation is really working well together,”

“Finally, we would like to thank all of our fans for their unwavering support, and we look forward to seeing you across the world this season.” Krack concluded. Credit to Aston Martin for the quote.

Stroll speaking on his new car and teaming up with a legend of the sport added:

“Looking at AMR23, I can see lots of new thinking and some aggressive work around the packaging and aerodynamics that should really help us out as we head into year two of these new rules,”

“I’m massively looking forward to working with Fernando. I’ve always got along very well with him – and it will be fantastic to race alongside him.” Stroll concluded. Credit to Aston Martin for the quote.

Alonso commenting on the team’s ambitions and the new car saying:

“I have always said that I could see the ambition that shines bright at AMF1. And, as we launch the car in this brand-new factory, I think everyone can now see the scale of the ambition and determination at the heart of this organisation,”

“Just as important is the car – and the AMR23 looks incredibly neatly packaged and highly efficient. I was pleasantly surprised when I sampled last year’s car for the very first time, and I think there is plenty of performance we can unlock together. I can’t wait to get started.” Alonso concluded. The AMR23 will be given its initial shakedown on February 15 for a filming day at Silverstone, where Stroll will pilot the car in the morning followed by Alonso in the afternoon.
