Antonelli Canadian GP FP1 – Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli lead from team-mate George Russell in a dominant Mercedes one-two in a three-time red-flag affected sole practice session at the Canadian GP as Ferrari’s Sir Lewis Hamilton completed the top three.

Antonelli on the C5 red side-walled softer compound, posted the session-topping benchmark of a 1:13.402 and was 0.142 seconds clear of team-mate Russell whilst Hamilton was a further 0.774 seconds adrift of the Italian.

 

Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg lead the field out on a set of the C3 white-marked harder tyre.

 

Cadillac’s Sergio Perez on the softer tyre registered the benchmark of a 1:23.437, which was beaten by Haas’s Esteban Ocon’s 1:22.910.

 

McLaren’s Piastri jumped to the top on a 1:19.489 to go 3.421 clear of Ocon as Alpine’s Franco Colapinto lost power down the back straight on the way down to the pit-lane.

 

The Argentine managed to make it back to the garage.

 

Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar hit the top only briefly with a 1:18.774 as Verstappen went even quicker with a 1:17.432 to end up 1.342 clear of his team-mate.

 

Leclerc moved to second with his 1:18.510 effort, which was then pipped by RB’s Liam Lawson’s 1:18.320 then Antonelli put his Silver Arrow second with a 1:17.526.

 

Piastri improved with a 1:16.879 to go fastest but only momentarily as Verstappen returned to the top with a 1:15.895 as Hadjar slotted into second to be 0.358 seconds off the Dutchman.

 

Replays showed Norris suffered a lock-up at the turn 10 hair-pin.

 

Lawson ended up fourth and 1.536 seconds adrift as the Kiwi suffered a hydraulics issue and came to a halt to bring out the Virtual Safety Car.

 

Norris was set to go quickest as the VSC was after being up in sector’s one and two.

 

The red flag was brought out to clear Lawson’s VCARB 03 racer was cleared.

 

After Lawson’s car was cleared, Piastri lead the pack out on-track with practice extended by four minutes due to the stoppage.

 

The Australian abandon his flyer as Williams’ Alexander Albon went fourth overall to be 1.258 off Verstappen’s benchmark as Russell slotted into fifth with his 1:17.238 effort.

 

Piastri was on a personal best run until he made an error at the final chicane as Russell improved to fourth with a 1:16.882.

 

Championship leader Antonelli with three personal bests moved up into third with a 1:16.734 but only briefly as team-mate Russell pipped the Italian to snatch third on a 1:16.284 to wound up 0.369 off Verstappen’s best time.

 

Antonelli improved to second to be 0.099 seconds off as Russell went quickest by 0.002 seconds ahead of Verstappen posting a 1:15.893.

 

Piastri went even faster, setting a 1:15.806 to be a slim 0.087 seconds ahead of Russell at the top of the pile.

 

Hamilton despite posting the best opening sector time, ended up fifth in the order to be 0.315 seconds off Russell’s best time as Antonelli with two personal bests pipped jumped to second to end up over three tenths down on his team-mate.

 

Piastri returned to P1 with a 1:14.963 to be 0.451 ahead of Russell.

 

Hamilton jumped to second posting a 1:15.405 as cameras cut to Albon who suffered a shunt hitting the wall between turns six and seven damaging his front suspension and front and rear wing bringing out a second red flag at the 24th minute mark.

 

The cause of the accident was Albon hitting a marmot on-track, the Thai-Briton driver walked away unscathed as the medical car came to pick him up.

 

After Albon’s FW48 entry was cleared with the session extended by a further 15 minutes following a lengthy red flag, RB’s Arvid Lindblad running the C4 mediums went 12th overall to be 1.904 off Piastri’s benchmark.

 

Russell was next and posting the best middle sector jumped to second with a 1:14.976 to end up only 0.013 seconds off Piastri’s best time as Leclerc jumped to third to be 0.437 seconds off the leading McLaren.

 

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso on the softs went to seventh in the classification with his 1:16,218 as Antonelli shot to the top posting a 1:14.670 to be ahead of Piastri as replays showed Norris suffer a front-right lock-up into the turns eight and nine chicane and taking to the run-off area.

 

Russell went even quicker improving to a 1:14.560 to take top spot from his team-mate Antonelli by 0.110 seconds as they continued to circulate the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on the harder rubber working on their race simulations.

 

Reigning world champion Norris put his McLaren into fourth place behind his team-mate Piastri, with the Briton ending up 0.632 off Russell’s benchmark.

 

Russell was on a charge as he improved to a 1:14.444 to be 0.226 seconds clear of team-mate Antonelli who had a brush with the wall.

 

Despite that, Antonelli with two purples in sectors one and three reclaimed P1 on a 1:14.392 to be 0.052 clear of his team-mate.

 

Norris improved slightly on his next timed-run was eight tenths down on Antonelli’s best time.

 

Hamilton jumped to fifth in the order posting a 1:15.266 and was 0.874 off Antonelli as replays showed Verstappen locked-up and had an excursion at the turns eight and nine chicane.

 

Antonelli also suffered a lock-up into turn one as Norris also toured into the grass at turns three and four from a snap.

 

Replays showed Hamilton suffered a front-right lock-up into the final chicane and had to act by using the run-off area.

 

With less than 18 minutes remaining on the clock, the majority were returning to the pits to adjust their setups to prepare for a qualifying simulation run.

 

Hamilton improved to third overall on a 1:14.752 with two personal bests as Russell emerged on the C5 softer compounds.

 

The Briton hit a 1:13.850 with two purples to be 0.542 clear of Antonelli who was building up on his out-lap with the softer rubber.

 

Antonelli with a purple sector one and three blasted to the top with a 1:13.402 to go 0.448 seconds in-front of team-mate Russell.

 

Leclerc was next on the C5’s and the Ferrari driver went to third with a 1:14.355 to end up 0.953 seconds off Antonelli.

 

Piastri followed and was up in sector two before suffering a lock-up into the final chicane and had to abort his hot-lap.

 

Russell also endured a lock-up into the opening corner, before on his next flying lap improved to end up 0.142 seconds off team-mate Antonelli’s best time.

 

Norris moved to fifth place setting two personal bests with a 1:14.799 to wound up 1.397 seconds off Antonelli’s benchmark.

 

Leclerc abandoned his flyer as his team-mate Hamilton jumped to third posting a 1:14.176 to be 0.774 adrift of Antonelli as replays showed Russell suffer a lock-up and spin across the track into turn one and briefly tapping the wall.

 

Double-waved yellows were waved after Haas’s Esteban Ocon was seen driving with a broken front wing and the red flag was brought out for a third time with six minutes left.

 

Replays showed Ocon lose it out of the turns three and four exit as his Ferrari-powered VF-26 entry pirouetted and hit the wall destroying his front wing scattering debris.

 

After the debris, the majority of drivers came out to perform a practice start.

 

The session ended with Antonelli, Russell and Hamilton the top three.

 

Leclerc followed in fourth and ahead of four-time world champion Verstappen who took fifth and the two McLaren’s of Norris and Piastri who were sixth and seventh respectively.

 

Lindblad ended up eighth overall as Hulkenberg and Alonso completed the top ten.
