2026 Belgian GP Preview – After Charles Leclerc scored his first victory since the 2024 United States Grand Prix at the British GP, which ended under the Safety Car, round 10 of the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship returns to the historic and classic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps this weekend before the sport’s traditional summer break for the Formula 1 Moet & Chandon Belgian Grand Prix 2026. This will be the 82nd Belgian Grand Prix and the 69th time that the race will be held at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. This is a double header with the Hungarian Grand Prix before the sport’s traditional summer break.

2026 Belgian GP Preview – A look at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

Built in 1921 and located in the Ardennes countryside in Stavelot Belgium, the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is a favourite amongst the drivers, teams and fans. The longest lap on the calendar will test the 1.6L turbocharged V6 hybrid powertrains to their limits through the high-speed sectors one and three but also aerodynamics through the twisty sector two.
Spa is one of the season’s fastest tracks and it features every kind of challenge with average speeds of 230kph. The throttle is wide open for approximately 23 seconds from the stretch of the exit of La Source to Les Combes. From the run down through Eau Rouge, up the steep incline towards the blind Radillon corner, to the flat-out Kemmel Straight, through Les Combes and the technically difficult stretch down through Rivage, Pouhon and Fagnes and on to the ultimately fast Blanchimont left-hander and despite many alterations over the years due to safety reasons, Spa remains an ultimate test for both man and machine.
Getting the car setup is crucial, with success being the right balance between low downforce for the high-speed first and third sectors and good grip for the twisty second sector.
The weather can also play a defining role. Ardennes defines the phrase ‘four seasons in one day’ and while one end of the circuit can be full of sunshine, the other can be drenched with rain. The unpredictable conditions can be a real headache for teams especially regarding tyre choice.
The current Grand Prix circuit layout is 7.004km (4.352 miles) in length and runs in a clockwise direction.
Race distance is 305.052km (191.415 miles) in length with 44 laps in total and 19 corners.
Sergio Perez holds the fastest lap record with a 1:46.286 set at the 2024 event in his Oracle Red Bull Racing Honda-RBPT RB20 racer.
Michael Schumacher holds the record for most Belgian Grand Prix victories with six.
Scuderia Ferrari is the most successful constructor at the Belgian Grand Prix with 18 victories.

2026 Belgian GP Preview – Overtake & Straight Mode Zones
The 2026 Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps showcases Formula One’s new active aerodynamics, replacing DRS with Straight Mode and Overtake Mode. Straight Mode reduces drag on designated straights, while Overtake Mode provides extra electrical power when a pursuing driver is within the FIA’s required detection range. At Spa, the first detection point is before Eau Rouge, with activation along the Kemmel Straight towards Les Combes. A second detection point sits before the Bus Stop chicane, with activation on the start-finish straight approaching La Source. These strategically positioned zones encourage close racing, rewarding precision, timing, speed, and decisive overtaking opportunities throughout.
2026 Belgian GP Preview – Pitlane Speed Limits
Pitlane speed limits will be 80km/h during practice, qualifying and the race.
ICYMI: Leclerc scores victory in dramatic British GP finish under the safety car

Charles Leclerc returned to the top step of the Formula One podium with a commanding victory in a dramatic 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, claiming his first win since the 2024 United States Grand Prix as the race finished behind the Safety Car following Max Verstappen’s late crash.
The Ferrari driver made the perfect start from second on the grid, sweeping past pole-sitter Andrea Kimi Antonelli into Abbey to lead a Ferrari one-two ahead of team-mate Sir Lewis Hamilton. Antonelli’s slow getaway, caused by wheelspin off the line, immediately put the championship leader on the back foot as he slipped to third.
Leclerc quickly established control of the race, managing his tyres superbly while Hamilton initially kept Antonelli at bay. The seven-time World Champion’s race became more complicated on lap eight when he received a five-second time penalty for a false start, allowing Antonelli to eventually move into second place at Copse.
Despite Mercedes appearing to have the pace to challenge Ferrari, Leclerc consistently maintained a comfortable advantage over Antonelli during the opening stint. Ferrari executed their pit strategy flawlessly, preserving the Monegasque’s lead despite Antonelli running a significantly fresher set of hard tyres during the closing stages.
The race turned dramatically with just over ten laps remaining. Antonelli, who had reduced the gap to under five seconds, suddenly reported a steering issue after debris became lodged in his front wheel shield. Multiple pit-stops failed to fully resolve the problem, leaving the Italian struggling for grip before he was also handed a five-second penalty for repeated track limits infringements. He eventually limped home in 16th place, seeing his championship advantage reduced.
Hamilton recovered well after serving his penalty and moved back into podium contention, overtaking Verstappen before a late Virtual Safety Car. However, the decisive moment came on lap 48 when Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull at Stowe and crashed into the gravel, bringing out the Safety Car.
While Leclerc and Hamilton both stopped for fresh soft tyres, George Russell stayed out on older hard tyres to inherit second place. With insufficient time to clear Verstappen’s stranded car, the Safety Car remained on circuit until the chequered flag, securing victory for Leclerc ahead of Russell and Hamilton.
The victory marked Leclerc’s ninth Formula One win, Ferrari’s landmark 250th Grand Prix victory and the Scuderia’s 18th triumph at Silverstone.
Reflecting on his long-awaited return to victory, Leclerc said: “It feels incredible. The end was maybe not the one I dreamt of, but to win after the last few weekends that were particularly difficult… I felt I had found something yesterday between the Sprint and Qualifying, and today the feeling was back where I wanted it to be. I am so, so happy. I really hope I can keep this momentum going forwards.”
Russell was pleased to secure his maiden British Grand Prix podium despite an eventful afternoon. “My first podium here even though, I don’t know, a very unlucky race – got the puncture, then very lucky. From my side, my tyres were stone cold so I was glad to bring it home in second. These Ferrari guys look really quick, so game on.”
Hamilton congratulated his team-mate while acknowledging his own mistakes. “Big, big congratulations to Charles, this is a great result for our team. I just didn’t have it today, I jumped the start, already got a penalty and Charles had to edge on me today. The team is doing a phenomenal job, look at these results – two wins for the team this year, this is fantastic.”

2026 Belgian GP – The Situation

The final double-header before the sport’s traditional summer break begins with the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend at the Circuit De Spa-Francorchamps.
Everything is all to play for after Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead took a major hit at the British Grand Prix last time out following more misfortune.
The Italian’s team-mate George Russell finished his home race second to close within 25 points after nine Grands Prix, whilst Ferrari’s Sir Lewis Hamilton is just seven points behind his former team-mate after clinching another podium whilst his team-mate Charles Leclerc earned the Scuderia a second win of the season in three races.
While it’s been more misfortune rather than any lack of speed, which has seen the 66-point advantage that Antonelli had built shrink, the Bologna-born-Italian is now under pressure to reassert himself in the championship fight.
There will also be a lot of attention on four-time World Champion Max Verstappen, whose Dutch army of fans will be in huge numbers for the event at Spa.
Verstappen’s future will also continue be under the spotlight; the Dutchman was critical of Red Bull at Silverstone after a technical problem caused him to crash for the second consecutive weekend, with those incidents coming after the Red Bull drivers’ representatives held talks with McLaren over a potential massive move.
Antonelli returns to Belgium sitting on top of the World Driver’s Championship with 179 points and a 25-point advantage over Mercedes team-mate Russell who is second on 154 points whilst Ferrari’s Hamilton is a further 32 points behind the Italian in third on 147 points.
Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team comes to the Circuit De Spa-Francorchamps on top of the World Constructors Championship with 333 points and a 78-points lead over nearest rivals Scuderia Ferrari who are second on 255 points whilst reigning World Constructor’s Champions McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team are a further 154 points behind the Brackley based-outfit in third place on 179 points.
