This was Hamilton’s second Sprint pole position of his career as the seven-time world champion has found that much-needed confidence in his quest for a potential eighth world title.
Ferrari were worried that the long straights would expose them power-wise expecting both Mercedes and potentially Red Bull to be much quicker, but Ferrari’s much-needed ICE upgrade helped do the business.
In SQ3, the initial flyers saw McLaren’s Oscar Piastri lead the pack out on track with the C3 red side-walled softer compounds.
The Australian registered the benchmark of a 1:28.772, as RB’s Arvid Lindblad slotted into second with a 1:29.367.
Norris went provisional pole on a 1:28.740 whilst Antonelli went P1 with a 1:29.387.

Mercedes’ George Russell ended up fifth with his 1:28.733 effort after Verstappen jumped to third to end up 0.321 seconds off Hamilton’s pole time setting a 1:28.697.
Both McLaren’s of Norris and Piastri ended up sixth and seventh respectively whilst Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar followed in eighth.
Racing Bulls pairing Liam Lawson and Lindblad rounded out the top ten.
In SQ2, which was topped by Hamilton, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly just missed out on an SQ3 appearance by a narrow 0.081 seconds meaning the Frenchman will start tomorrow’s 100km Sprint outside the top ten in 11th place.
Audi duo Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg were next qualifying in 12th and 13th respectively with the latter unable to improve despite three personal bests.
The other Alpine A526 entry of Franco Colapinto ended up 14th and in-front of Williams’ pairing Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon who were the slowest of the SQ2 eliminatees in 15th and 16th.
In SQ1, which was topped by Hamilton, a late improvement from Albon saw Haas’s Oliver Bearman eliminated and missing out on SQ2 by a slim 0.010 seconds with the young Briton ending up 17th and ahead of team-mate Esteban Ocon who wounded up 18th despite a late improvement.
The two Cadillac MAC01 entries of Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas were 19th and 20th respectively whilst Aston Martin pairing Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll brought up the rear.

“I love this place, I love this crowd and I can’t express how big a dream it is and still to this day, building up to this race and the flow you get if you get the set-up right. The car has felt really good today so thank you to the guys back at the factory. I’m really grateful to get the pole, I was quick but it was only ten milliseconds or something like that so really grateful. Look, we are ahead of Mercedes, those guys and Red Bull have so much power here. But my team keep on pushing, it won’t always be like this, but this is an amazing surprise. I am ecstatic!”
