The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a permanent racing circuit in Barcelona, Montmelo, Catalonia, Spain.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was built in 1991 and began hosting the Spanish Grand Prix that same year and has been running there ever since until this year where the Madring Circuit will play host as the Spanish Grand Prix and the Circuit De Barcelona-Catalunya (Catalan Grand Prix) will be on a rotational basis with the Circuit De Spa-Francorchamps (Belgian Grand Prix) from 2027, 2029 and 2031. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is also used for the FIM MotoGP World Championship.

The Barcelona circuit is famed as a bellwether circuit as the cars that race well here are expected to race well in any and all conditions. The logic behind this is that the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya provides a well-rounded examination of every aspect of car design, requiring maximum downforce, stronger delivery of power, excellent traction and handling. The Spanish Grand Prix also traditionally is where teams bring their first major upgrades of the season and could see the potential for movement around the field.

The wind direction at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya can change at any-time during the day and can upset the balance of the car due to the major importance of aerodynamics that modern Formula One cars have. It is then a challenge to find a well-balanced setup since cars can suffer massive drag and understeer on one part of the track in the morning session but suffer oversteer at the same section in the afternoon. An allocated tyre compound can work well during testing, but not as well a few months later as changeable conditions can provide unexpected performances from some teams during the Grand Prix.

Formula 1 uses the layout used by MotoGP since 2021 removing the chicane in sector three of the lap that Formula One had used every year since it was introduced in 2007 reverting to the two double-sweeping fast right-hand corner configuration that Formula 1 last used back in 2006 campaign.

The circuit runs in a clockwise direction and is 4.657km (2.894mi) in length with 14 corners.

The race distance is 307.236km (190.907mi) with 66 laps in total.

Seven-time World Champion’s Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton hold the most victories at the circuit with six each to their respective names.

Scuderia Ferrari is the most successful constructor winning at the Circuit De Barcelona-Catalunya 12 times.

Oscar Piastri holds the fastest lap record set at the 2025 event with a 1:15.743 in his Oracle Red Bull Racing Honda-RBPT RB19 racer.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable start to the 2026 Formula 1 season by claiming a dominant victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, securing his fifth consecutive win and becoming the youngest-ever winner of the prestigious race.

The Mercedes driver converted pole position into victory on a dramatic afternoon around the streets of Monte Carlo, finishing ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar. The race featured multiple Safety Cars, a late red flag and seven retirements, including reigning World Champion Lando Norris, four-time World Champion Max Verstappen and home favourite Charles Leclerc.

The result sees Antonelli extend his lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 66 points over Hamilton, who moves up to second in the standings heading into the Formula 1 MSC Cruises Gran Premio de España at Barcelona-Catalunya.

Monaco’s drama began before the lights even went out. Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto was forced to start from the pit lane after stalling on the sighting laps, while Verstappen suffered an anti-stall issue at the start. The Dutchman eventually got away but retired shortly afterwards with a power-unit problem, ending a difficult weekend for Red Bull.

At the front, Antonelli controlled proceedings from the outset. After building an early advantage over Hamilton, the Italian expertly managed traffic, tyre wear and strategy to maintain his grip on the race. Ferrari’s Hamilton and Leclerc occupied the remaining podium positions through much of the opening stint, while Hadjar impressed by holding off sustained pressure from Mercedes’ George Russell despite battling technical concerns throughout the race.

Hamilton’s challenge was complicated by a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, one of several penalties handed out during a race where drivers regularly pushed the limits around Monaco’s notoriously tight pit entry. Russell, Pierre Gasly, Oscar Piastri and Franco Colapinto were among those also penalised.

Hadjar emerged as one of the standout performers of the afternoon. The Frenchman repeatedly reported gearbox and power-related issues but continued to defend strongly against Russell and remained firmly in podium contention. Meanwhile, McLaren endured a frustrating race as Norris retired with recurring power-unit problems, while team-mate Piastri recovered to finish just outside the podium places.

Following the pit-stop cycle, Antonelli’s lead continued to grow. The Mercedes driver opened a commanding advantage of more than 20 seconds over Hamilton and appeared on course for an uncomplicated victory before the race was turned upside down by late incidents.

The first major interruption came when Lance Stroll crashed at Antony Noghes, bringing out the Safety Car. Shortly after racing resumed, local favourite Leclerc suffered heartbreak when he crashed at La Rascasse after running onto marbles off the racing line. The Ferrari driver was unhurt, but his retirement triggered a second Safety Car and eventually a red flag to allow circuit repairs and track clean-up.

When the race resumed following a standing restart, Antonelli once again executed flawlessly, maintaining the lead from Hamilton into the opening corner and controlling the final laps.

Behind him, the fight for the final podium position was ultimately decided by penalties. Gasly initially crossed the line third but two separate five-second penalties dropped the Alpine driver to seventh in the final classification. That promoted Hadjar to a memorable podium finish, marking one of the biggest results of his Formula 1 career.

Piastri finished fourth ahead of Liam Lawson and impressive rookie Arvid Lindblad, while Alex Albon and Esteban Ocon also scored valuable points. Cadillac celebrated a milestone moment by securing its first Formula 1 point through Sergio Perez.

Monaco once again delivered its share of drama, but the headline story belonged to Antonelli. The Italian controlled the race from pole position, handled every challenge presented to him and left the Principality with a fifth consecutive victory. As the championship moves to Barcelona, the Mercedes driver arrives with momentum firmly on his side and a growing advantage at the top of the standings.

Formula 1’s European summer swing continues with the Formula 1 MSC Cruises Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix this weekend.

After World Driver’s Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli continued his spectacular form to record a fifth-consecutive victory in Monaco last Sunday, the sport heads to Spain

The teams generally bring significant upgrades to the circuit, whilst the classic layout in Montmelo ensures fans flock from Barcelona to enjoy the race weekend.

Seven-time world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton will be aiming for his maiden victory in Ferrari red after two successive second places, but perhaps the most crucial element could be if George Russell can propel himself back with a momentum swing.

The pre-season title favourite has dropped to third in the standings behind former team-mate Hamilton and desperately needs to start reducing the 68-point gap to team-mate Antonelli.

Meanwhile, reigning world champion Lando Norris and four-time world champion Max Verstappen will be aiming to bounce back after technical problems that resulted in the pairing retiring on the streets of Monte Carlo, with their respective McLaren and Red Bull teams yet to establish a strong level of consistency expected from them.

Antonelli returns to Spain sitting on top of the World Driver’s Championship with 161 points and a 66-point lead over Ferrari’s Hamilton who is second on 90 points whilst Russell is a further 68 points behind his Italian team-mate in third place on 88 points.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team heads to Barcelona leading the World Constructor’s Championship with 244 points and a 79-points buffer over nearest rivals Scuderia Ferrari who are second on 165 points whilst McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team is third and a further 126 points behind the Woking based-outfit on 118 points.

Formula 1 has confirmed that the Las Vegas Grand Prix will remain on the calendar until at least 2037 after announcing a new 10-year contract extension with local authorities and stakeholders in Nevada.

The race, which made its return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2023, has quickly established itself as one of the sport’s premier events, combining high-speed racing on the iconic Las Vegas Strip with world-class entertainment and hospitality. The extension ensures Formula 1’s flagship American street race will continue for another decade beyond its current agreement.

Since its debut, the Las Vegas Grand Prix has become a major success story for Formula 1’s expansion in the United States. Event organisers report that the first three editions generated a cumulative economic impact of approximately $3.2 billion for Southern Nevada, while the 2025 race alone contributed $43 million in state and local tax revenue. All three events have sold out, highlighting the growing popularity of Formula 1 in the region.

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali welcomed the announcement, describing Las Vegas as a key part of the championship’s long-term strategy.

“We are thrilled that Formula 1 will continue racing in Las Vegas for many years to come,” said Domenicali. He added that since its debut in 2023, the event has been “extraordinary” and has rapidly established itself as a premier destination for racing, entertainment and global business.

Domenicali also highlighted the race’s impact beyond the circuit, noting that it has delivered a “strong and lasting impact” on the local economy and community. He described Las Vegas as a “cornerstone” of Formula 1’s presence in the United States, with the extension reinforcing the sport’s commitment to one of its most important growth markets.

The extension further strengthens Formula 1’s position in North America, where the championship now boasts three United States races alongside Miami and Austin. With Las Vegas secured through 2037, Formula 1 has demonstrated its confidence in the event’s long-term future and its continued role as one of the sport’s marquee destinations.
