Pierre Gasly has officially regained his podium finish from the Monaco Grand Prix after Alpine’s successful Right of Review appeal led FIA stewards to overturn the penalties that had stripped the Frenchman of third place.

The decision brings an end to one of the most controversial post-race disputes of the 2026 Formula 1 season and restores what would have been one of Alpine’s most significant results in recent years.

Gasly’s Monaco Heartbreak

Gasly crossed the finish line in third place on the streets of Monte Carlo following a superb drive that saw him climb through the field during a chaotic race. However, celebrations were short-lived after the Alpine driver received two separate five-second penalties for alleged pit lane speeding infringements.

The combined 10-second penalty dropped Gasly from third to seventh in the final classification, costing him what appeared to be a hard-earned podium finish.

The French driver was visibly devastated after the race, insisting both he and the team had followed the correct procedures when entering the pit lane. Alpine immediately signalled its intention to challenge the decision, filing a formal Right of Review request with the FIA.

Alpine Uncovers New Evidence

Under FIA regulations, a Right of Review can only proceed if a team presents significant and relevant new evidence that was not available to race stewards at the time of the original decision.

During the review process, Alpine submitted data showing Gasly had activated his pit lane speed limiter before crossing the entry line and had remained within the prescribed speed limit. More importantly, evidence from Formula One Management (FOM) indicated that the distance used to calculate pit lane speeds in Monaco had been measured incorrectly.

The inaccurate measurement allegedly caused official timing systems to overestimate the speed of several cars entering the pit lane, resulting in penalties that may never have been justified.

The FIA stewards accepted that Alpine had presented new and significant evidence, allowing the appeal to move forward before ultimately reviewing the original sanctions.

FIA Overturns Penalties

Following the review hearing, FIA stewards decided to rescind the penalties imposed on Gasly, restoring him to his original third-place finish in the Monaco Grand Prix.

The ruling officially returns the Alpine driver to the podium and delivers a major boost to both Gasly and the Enstone-based team after a difficult start to the season.

The decision also validates Alpine’s long-standing claim that the penalties were based on flawed timing data rather than an actual breach of the pit lane speed limit.

Wider Questions Remain

While Gasly has successfully regained his podium, the outcome raises further questions regarding other drivers who were penalised for pit lane speeding during the Monaco weekend.

Several competitors, including George Russell, Oscar Piastri and Franco Colapinto, were also caught up in the same pit lane timing controversy. However, because those penalties were served during the race or were not formally challenged through a Right of Review process, their situations are considerably more complex.

The case has also prompted scrutiny of Formula 1’s timing systems and the procedures used to calculate pit lane speeds during race weekends.

Major Result for Alpine

For Alpine, the successful appeal represents more than just a recovered trophy. The restored podium delivers valuable championship points and provides a morale boost for a team that has been searching for momentum throughout the 2026 campaign.

For Gasly, the decision finally delivers recognition for a standout Monaco performance that had initially appeared destined to be remembered as one of the sport’s most painful near-misses.

After days of uncertainty, the Frenchman can now officially celebrate what becomes the sixth Formula 1 podium finish of his career and one of the most dramatic reinstatements in recent Formula 1 history.
