Leclerc Monaco GP FP1 – Home favourite Charles Leclerc lead from team-mate Sir Lewis Hamilton in a Ferrari one-two in a red-flag-affected opening practice at the Monaco GP as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen rounded out the top three. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli was fourth for Mercedes.

Leclerc posted the session-topping benchmark on the C4 yellow-branded medium compounds with a 1:13.978 and was 0.226 seconds clear of Hamilton whilst Verstappen was a further 0.513 seconds adrift in third.
Cadillac’s Sergio Perez lead the pack out onto the Circuit De Monaco on the C3 white-marked harder tyres.
The Mexican was the first to register a lap-time of a 1:23.003, which was beaten by Verstappen’s 1:20.680 as his Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar slotted into second with his 1:21.695 effort.
Hamilton was next jumping to the top on a 1:19.737 whilst Verstappen moved back to the top on a 1:18.119 to be 1.168 clear of the Ferrari driver.
Home favourite Leclerc went 0.399 seconds quicker than Verstappen with his 1:17.720 – only momentarily as the Dutchman returned to P1 with his 1:17.753 to go 0.367 seconds quicker than Leclerc.
Hamilton went even quicker taking top spot on a 1:15.892 to be 0.581 seconds clear of Verstappen as Piastri and Norris moved to third and fourth respectively to end up 1.039 and 1.288 seconds off Hamilton’s best effort.
Verstappen improved once more but remained second posting a 1:15.977 as Hadjar jumped to third setting a 1:16.568 to wound up 0.676 at the ninth-minute-mark.
Hamilton hit a 1:15.617 to go 0.360 seconds in-front of Verstappen near the end of the opening ten minutes of the session.
Championship leader Antonelli moved up to fourth to be 1.126 seconds adrift of Hamilton’s benchmark as Verstappen improved his effort to a 1:15.910 to end up 0.293 seconds off his 2021 championship rival.
Reigning world champion Norris went up to third overall with a 1:16.487 to be 0.870 off Hamilton’s best time.
Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg jumped to fourth to be 0.896 off Hamilton as Antonelli moved up into second to be 0.147 seconds off Hamilton.
Leclerc followed as the home favourite hit s 1:15.060 to go fastest by 0.557 seconds ahead of his team-mate as Norris slotted into fifth on a 1:16.016 flyer.
Piastri was next as the Australian remained in eighth and 1.604 off as championship leader Antonelli took second with his 1:15.436 to end up 0.376 off Leclerc and splitting the two Ferrari’s.
Haas’s Oliver Bearman went ninth in the order with a 1:17.245 but was demoted by Alpine’s Pierre Gasly who posted a 1:17.027.
Aussie Piastri put his McLaren seventh in the classification to end up 1.397 off Leclerc as the Monegasque driver improved at the top setting a 1:14.928 with two purples in sectors one and three.
Leclerc was 0.508 seconds clear of Antonelli who was in the pits after his opening stint.
Hamilton followed with a another hot-lap and the Briton slotted into second behind his team-mate Leclerc to be 0.182 seconds off despite a purple middle sector.
Four-time world champion Verstappen was next as he reported his tyres were “completely dead” on his 13th lap on the harder compounds and the Dutchman remained in fourth posting a 1:15.190 to end up 0.982 seconds adrift of Leclerc.
Replays showed Hamilton suffer a massive front-right lock-up at St. Devote and managed to spin round and rejoin the track.
Russell on the mediums saw the Briton on his hot-lap only improving to ninth overall with a 1:16.714 whilst his team-mate Antonelli jumped to third to end up 0.508 seconds adrift of Leclerc’s best effort.
A brief virtual safety car was deployed with 31 minutes remaining after debris was found from an Alpine but was quickly cleared and the running returned to green.
The majority of the field were back in their respective garage past the opening half-an-hour mark of proceedings adjusting their setups as Antonelli, Norris and Piastri emerged on the C4 medium rubber.
Antonelli with three purples went fastest on a 1:14.537 to be 0.391 seconds clear of Leclerc with 28 minutes left on the clock.
Russell moved up into fourth to be 1.082 seconds off Leclerc posting a 1:15.619 effort on the mediums.
Hadjar improved to seventh-best with a 1:16.148 as Piastri went to fifth and 1.355 off Leclerc.
Russell made gains to take third setting a 1:15.008 as Hadjar suffered a heavy shunt into the barriers at the Swimming Pool complex bringing out the red flag with 24 minutes and 34 seconds on the clock.
Replays showed Hadjar suffered a snap from the rear and sending the RB22 entry over the kerbs and went front on into the barrier smashing his front wing, left wheels and rear wing with the Frenchman walking away unscathed.
With 17 minutes remaining and Hadjar’s Ford-RBPT powered RB22 cleared, Audi’s Hulkenberg lead the pack out on the medium tyres.
Leclerc improved on his lap-time with the mediums to set a 1:14.749 to be 0.212 seconds off championship leader Antonelli as the Ferrari driver remained in second.
Verstappen was next on the mediums and with a purple sector three jumped to third overall posting a 1:14.938 to be 0.401 seconds off Antonelli as replays showed Leclerc suffer a front-right lock-up at the Nouvelle Chicane.
Hulkenberg improved to sixth to be 0.806 off Antonelli as Verstappen got to 0.247 second adrift of the Italian and remained in third.
Hamilton was next and went fastest setting a 1:14.204 with two personal bests and purple middle sector to be 0.333 seconds in-front of Antonelli as Norris slotted into fifth and 1.087 seconds off.
Leclerc with three purples pipped his team-mate to hit the 1:13’s bracket. A 1:13.978 to be 0.226 clear of Hamilton.
Verstappen improved on his next timed-run on the mediums but stayed third and ended up 0.513 seconds off Leclerc as Piastri was impeded by RB’s Arvid Lindblad out of Tabac.
Replays showed Leclerc having a close call, almost clipping the wall out of St. Devote.
Yellow flags were being waved after Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso damaged his front wing after hitting the wall.
The red flags were waved once more to clear the debris of Alonso’s AMR26 entry as replays showed the double world champion suffered a snap and hit the wall with his right wheels and front wing.
After the debris was cleared quickly, the majority of the field headed out to complete a practice start to end the session.
Leclerc ended the session fastest in-front of team-mate Hamilton as Verstappen completed the top three.
The top two championship contenders Antonelli and Russell were fourth and fifth respectively for Mercedes as reigning world champion Norris took sixth for McLaren.
Hulkenberg split the McLaren’s taking seventh as Piastri ended up eighth.
The other Audi R26 entry of Gabriel Bortoleto placed ninth as Alpine’s Pierre Gasly completed the top ten runners.
