Hamilton Monaco GP FP2 – Sir Lewis Hamilton topped the time-sheets in the afternoon practice session at the Monaco GP ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc in another Ferrari one-two as four-time world champion Max Verstappen completed the top three. Championship contenders George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli were fourth and fifth respectively in the order for Mercedes.

Hamilton posted the session-topping benchmark on the C5 red side-walled softer compounds with a 1:13.026 and ahead of team-mate Leclerc by 0.111 seconds whilst Verstappen was a further 0.168 adrift of the seven-time world champion in third.

 

Russell led the pack out running the C4 yellow-branded medium tyres.

 

The Briton registered the opening benchmark of a 1:22.176, as Verstappen slotted in second posting a 1:24.039.

 

Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto went quickest on a 1:20.653 as his team-mate Nico Hulkenberg went to second on a 1:21.653.

 

Reigning world champion Norris took P1 on a 1:17.011 as home favourite Leclerc pushed to second with a 1:17.024.

 

Verstappen then took top spot on a 1:15.933 to be 1.078 clear of Norris.

 

Hamilton went even quicker on a 1:14.306 as Norris moved to second to be 1.253 adrift of his fellow-British-compatriot.

 

Leclerc went to the top of the pile setting a 1:14.240 to be 0.066 seconds faster than team-mate Hamilton whilst Verstappen ended up third with a 1:14.960.

 

Championship leader Antonelli jumped to sixth in the order with three personal bests setting a 1:15.673 to end up 1.433 off Leclerc’s benchmark.

 

Replays showed RB’s Liam Lawson suffer a tap of his rear right on the wall out of Tabac.

 

Leclerc improved again with a 1:14.192 to be 0.114 clear of Hamilton as Russell jumped to third with a 1:14.578 effort.

 

Antonelli pushed his Silver Arrow to second with a 1:14.208 to b be a slim 0.016 off Leclerc.

 

Verstappen was next and with two purples went even faster with a 1:14.008 to go 0.167 in-front of home favourite Leclerc.

 

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri moved to sixth best to be 1.100 off Verstappen’s benchmark as Hamilton shot to the head of the times posting a 1:13.729 to be 0.279 ahead of the Dutchman at the 11th-minute-mark.

 

Reigning world champion Norris was seen stopping in the run-off area at the Nouvelle Chicane deploying the virtual safety car.

 

Replays showed the Briton run off into the escape road as his Mercedes power-unit cut out.

 

When the VSC ended with 41 minutes remaining, the majority of the front-runners returned to the pits to adjust their setups.

 

Leclerc despite running a bit too hot at the Nouvelle Chicane and losing a bit of time jumped to the top with a 1:13.613 after a purple opening sector.

 

Hamilton improved with a personal best lap to be 0.058 seconds off his Ferrari team-mate Leclerc setting a 1:13.671 effort.

 

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly went to seventh overall to post a 1:14.971 on the C5 red side-walled softer compounds.

 

Verstappen, Antonelli, Russell and Piastri all emerged on the softer compounds to begin their qualifying simulation stints.

 

Verstappen improved to third in the order on a 1:13.902 as Hulkenberg jumped to fourth with a 1:14.094.

 

Antonelli with three personal bests moved to third to be 0.237 off Leclerc.

 

Verstappen was next with a purple middle sector and took P1 setting a 1:13.247 to go 0.146 seconds clear of Leclerc.

 

Hamilton followed still on the mediums and slotted into second to end up 0.082 off Verstappen with a purple sector two.

 

Gasly improved to sixth in the order with a 1:14.497 as championship leader Antonelli abandoned his flyer after running off into the Nouvelle Chicane run-off area.

 

Russell pushed his Mercedes to second with three personal bests posting a 1:13.515 to be a slim 0.048 adrift of Verstappen’s benchmark just past the 30th-minute-mark of the hour-long session.

 

Antonelli on his next flyer remained in fifth place with two personal bests to be 0.285 seconds off Verstappen’s best time.

 

Piastri with three personal bests jumped to sixth with a 1:14.088 as Verstappen went even faster setting a 1:13.194 with two purple sectors – this was only brief as home favourite Leclerc with two purple sectors went to the head of the time-sheets posting a 1:13.137 to end up 0.057 seconds in-front of Verstappen.

 

Hamilton took P1 to be 0.111 seconds clear of team-mate Leclerc after setting a 1:13.026 flyer on the softer rubber.

 

Both Mercedes drivers Russell and Antonelli could not improve on their next flyers and remained in fourth and fifth respectively.

 

Bortoleto with a personal best sector three effort pushed his Audi R26 entry to eighth in the classification setting a 1:14.359 as Russell improved on his time in fourth place on a 1:13.405 effort.

 

Replays showed Alpine’s Franco Colapinto suffer a massive lock-up into St. Devote and, on the exit, hit his left wheels on the wall.

 

Home favourite Leclerc was next on another flying lap and despite a personal best middle sector, the Ferrari driver remained in second place behind his team-mate.

 

Hadjar with three personal bests jumped to sixth overall setting a 1:14.087 to end up 1.061 seconds adrift of Hamilton’s benchmark time with 13 minutes remaining.

 

Majority of the field bar the top three of Hamilton, Leclerc and Verstappen, Hadjar and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll were all on track with less than ten minutes left on the clock doing their long race data gathering runs.

 

Cadillac’s Sergio Perez was seen driving with a front-right brake fire aboard his MAC01 racer and the Mexican pulled off at Casino Square with four minutes and 36 seconds remaining as the red flags were waved.

 

After Perez’s Cadillac was clear with less than two minutes remaining, the whole field bar Norris emerged to complete a practice start on the grid.

 

The session ended with Hamilton, Leclerc and Verstappen the top three.

 

Both Mercedes of Russell and Antonelli followed in fourth and fifth respectively as Hadjar placed sixth in the Red Bull.

 

Piastri the sole-running McLaren was next in seventh and in-front of the Audi pairing of Hulkenberg and Bortoleto who were eighth and ninth.

 

Haas’s Oliver Bearman rounded out the top ten.
