Russell Barcelona GP FP1 – Mercedes’ George Russell topped the time-sheets in opening practice at the Barcelona GP in a session featuring seven reserve drivers with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completing the top three. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli sat out of the session along with reigning world champion Lando Norris and seven-time world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton.

Russell posted the session-topping benchmark of a 1:16.363 on the C4 red-marked softer tyres and was 0.203 seconds clear of Piastri whilst Leclerc was a further 0.520 seconds off the Briton in third.

 

Championship leader Antonelli gives his F1 W17 entry to Frederik Vesti for opening practice, Hamilton hands over his SF-26 to Dino Beganovic, Leonardo Fornaroli steps in to reigning world champion Norris’s McLaren, Luke Browning hops in Alexander Albon’s Williams, Ayumu Iwasa is in for Isack Hadjar at Red Bull, Colton Herta in for Sergio Perez at Cadillac and Paul Aron in place for Nico Hulkenberg at Audi.

 

Alpine’s Franco Colapinto was the first to head out on the C3 yellow-marked medium compounds.

 

Home favourite Carlos Sainz was seen stuck on the pit-lane line.

 

Cadillac’s Herta posted the benchmark of a 1:24.225, which was beaten by Haas’s Esteban Ocon’s 1:21.947 effort then was ousted by Verstappen’s 1:18.511 setting three purples.

 

Arvid Lindblad put his VCARB into second place on a 1:19.258, the was pipped by Piastri’s 1:118.885 setting a purple final sector.

 

Leclerc was next with three personal bests moving up into third with a 1:19.152 as RB’s Liam Lawson went quickest on a 1:18.297 to be 0.114 seconds clear of Verstappen.

 

Russell put his Silver Arrow on top with a 1:17.414 to go 0.983 seconds in-front of Lawson.

 

Lindblad improved to third to be 1.087 off Russell’s benchmark.

 

Piastri jumped to second posting a 1:17.619 with a purple sector one and two personal bests.

 

Leclerc with three personal bests moved up into third overall on a 1:18.009 to be 0.595 seconds adrift of Russell at the ninth-minute-mark of proceedings.

 

Vesti piloting Antonelli’s Silver Arrow jumped to eighth to end up 2.490 seconds off team-mate for the session Russell’s best time.

 

Replays showed Herta suffer a wild snap at turn eight and managed to keep it steady and on-track.

 

Russell improved at the head of the time-sheets posting a 1:17.353 to be 0.202 seconds clear of Piastri who also lowered his benchmark on his next flyer with his 1:17.555 effort.

 

Sainz pushed his FW48 entry up to eighth to wound up 1.984 seconds off Russell after the Grove-based-outfit fixed the Spaniard’s issue.

 

Verstappen with two personal bests remained in sixth as the four-time world champion was sitting 1.158 seconds off Russell.

 

Gabriel Bortoleto in the Audi set a 1:19.745 to go ninth overall with three personal bests as the Brazilian ended up 2.392 off Russell’s best effort.

 

Colapinto moved up to ninth demoting Bortoleto on a 1:19.461 but only briefly as Alpine’s Pierre Gasly pipped his team-mate in that exact spot on the time-sheets with a 1:19.401.

 

Williams Team Principal James Vowles reported an electric issue plaguing Browning’s running in Albon’s FW48.

 

Vesti running the C4 softer rubber was up into seventh setting a 1:19.163 to end up 1.810 off team-mate Russell.

 

Aron also on the softer tyres moved into seventh place jumping Vesti on a 1:18.515 and set the quickest sector three time on that hot-lap.

 

Red Bull’s Verstappen and RB’s Lindblad emerged on the C4’s preparing for a qualifying simulation run.

 

Vesti improved to fifth in the order posting a 1:18.447 to be 1.094 off Russell.

 

Verstappen was next and the Dutchman went to the top of the pile with a 1;17.047 to be 0.306 seconds clear of Russell as the session past his halfway point.

 

Replays showed Bortoleto suffer a wild moment over the gravel at turn seven.

 

Lindblad put his VCARB up into seventh and 0.757 seconds off Verstappen’s benchmark.

 

Russell on his flying tour with three purples went fastest on a 1:16.363 to end up 0.684 seconds in-front of Verstappen with less than 26 minutes remaining on the clock.

 

Piastri jumped to second with two purples on the C3 mediums to be 0.203 seconds off Russell.

 

Leclerc was next on his hot-lap on the softs and ended up 0.520 seconds off Russell and placed third on a 1:16.883.

 

Lawson followed with three personal bests to be 1.109 seconds off Russell to take fifth place in the order, but momentarily as Audi’s Aron pipped the Kiwi with a 1:17.321 effort to jump into fifth.

 

Beganovic in-place of Hamilton put his Ferrari seventh on a 1:17.778 to be 1.415 adrift of Russell.

 

Fornaroli in Norris’s McLaren MCL40 racer set three personal bests to move into fifth place on the time-sheets to set a 1:17.216 to end up 0.853 off Russell’s best time.

 

The session finished with Russell ahead of Piastri and Leclerc who rounded out the top three.

 

Verstappen was fourth for Red Bull and in-front of McLaren’s Fornaroli who took fifth and Audi’s Aron who placed sixth.

 

Lawson ended up seventh for RB and ahead of Beganovic who came eighth in the classification for Ferrari.

 

RB’s Lindblad and Alpine’s Colapinto completed the top ten runners.
