This was Russell’s third pole of the season and his first ever pole at the Circuit De Barcelona-Catalunya as the Briton aims to get himself back in the winner’s circle.

In Q3, the initial flyers saw Verstappen the first to lead the pack out on track and the four-time world champion registered the benchmark of a 1:15.328, which was ousted by Piastri’s 1:15.176.

Red flags were waved at eight minutes and 30 seconds remaining after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc suffered a shunt into the wall.

Replays showed the Monegasque driver start to hit the throttle out of turn four and suffered a snap of the rear and over corrected with opposite lock into the dirty part of the track and went straight into the barrier damaging his front wing.

After Leclerc’s SF-26 entry was cleared and the running resumed, Antonelli lead the pack out on-track and the championship leader with three personal bests went third with a 1:15.414.

Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar with three personal bests ended up fourth with a 1:15.650 effort.

Russell was next with a purple middle sector, and two personal bests went on provisional pole with a 1:15.145 to be 0.031 clear of Piastri.

The final flying laps saw Antonelli out-first after switching his used set of C4’s for a fresher set and the championship leader posted a 1:114.998 to grab provisional pole but only briefly as with two purple sectors Russell snatched provisional pole off Antonelli with a 1:14.670.

Norris ended up third and 0.322 off Russell as Verstappen slotted into fourth pipping Piastri with his 1:15.021.

Hamilton with a purple middle sector split the two Mercedes to grab second posting a 1:14.743 to be a slim 0.064 seconds off Russell who secured the pole.

Hadjar placed fifth, also jumping ahead of Piastri after his final hot-lap as RB’s Liam Lawson took eighth.

Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg took ninth as the aforementioned Leclerc completed the top ten.

In the middle segment, which was topped by Russell, a late improvement from Hulkenberg sent RB’s Arvid Lindblad out by a slim 0.072 seconds meaning the Briton will start outside the top ten in 11th place.

Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto improved on his final flyer but was only enough for 12th and in-front of Alpine duo Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly who followed in 13th and 14th respectively.

Haas’s Oliver Bearman and Williams’ Carlos Sainz were the slowest of the Q2 eliminatees in 15th and 16th respectively.

In the opening qualifying stage, which was topped by Hamilton, a late improvement from home favourite Sainz eliminated Haas’s Esteban Ocon from Q1 meaning the Frenchman will start the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix 17th.

Williams’ Alexander Albon with three personal bests ended up 18th and ahead of Cadillac duo Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas who were 19th and 20th respectively.

Aston Martin pairing Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso brought up the rear with the latter starting his home Grand Prix last.
